Since this is my first engine (partial build) I just want to be sure this is correct before I continue. I want "Murphy's Law" to stay away from my engine.

You have correctly assembled the entire timing set and pump eccentric.

I love doing SBF timing sets!!!! I just hate removing all the crap necessary to get to that point. But that looks perfect!!!

Did you put some loc-tite on the bolt that holds the cover in place?(The center bolt that holds the camshaft dowel pin in place) I forgot just once, and had to pull it all the way apart again......

As others have said, everything looks good, congrats. I notice you are using the 1 piece fuel pump eccentric. If you are not already aware, there are 2 different eccentrics (1 piece and 2 piece) and they are not universally compatible with the timing covers. The 1 piece is slightly thicker and causes an interference with the timing cover (I believe the early style cover is not compatible). Do a dry fit of your timing cover and turn the engine over by hand a few rotations to make sure you don't have an interference. Remove the cover and if you have rubbing, you will be able to tell. It's much easier to find this out now before putting in the car and running etc.

I will be building my engine as well but it will be my first.

Isn't there usually 3 key slots on the crank gear? One for 4 degrees advance, one for neutral and one for 4 degrees retarded? I only see one key slot. What am I missing (besides experience)?

stock replacement timing sets only have one slot in the crank gear. it is the aftermarket ones that have multiple key ways.

Hey thanks all, I feel better now!

Yes I did lock tight the eccentric screw as well as the two screw behind that hold the cam plate in place.

I did check for timing cover clearance, the gear had to be cut down a touch by my machinist to allow the proper clearance, good call jcode.

I am the slowest Mustang rebuilder for sure, and ask lots of elemetary questions but, I have caught many potential errors just in the last few weeks being extra careful.

Thanks guys for all the assistance!

Once I get the timing cover and water pump on I can get to adjusting the valves and then installing the intake.

Just pick up a copy of the book 'Rebuilding Small Block Fords' (or something like that) and follow it and you'll be fine.

I got that book, and have been reading it.
I have two books actually and that is one of them.
My machinist has been very helpful also.
