yes, its possible.. I seen a guy make is own setup for a vortech using an Ebay intercooler and a univerversal intercooler piping kit. He just ran a pipe from the blower to the intercooler, and then fron the intercooler back to the TB.
It looked pretty decent and I believe he said he had about 200 in the whole set up.

Yeah, i'm sure there would be a gain as long as the pressure loss across the cooler is minimal. Any time you boost an engine the temperature of the charge air gets alot hotter. Cooling it down with an air to air cooler can definately provide benefits.
I good friend of mine made his own using an air to air intercooler he got on ebay and some metal tubing on his SN95. Looks and works great. He also flipped the upper intake on his BBK SSI intake to run the piping back to the TB. His name on the site is Txlen, Im sure he would be happy to help you out.
This seems to be a major difference between the turbo guys and the supercharger guys. We tend to think outside of the box a bit more when it comes to fabrication, and "kit's" are not a necessity. When in doubt, fabricate something up that's functional and looks good. You supercharger guys have the ability to do the same…you just don't know it yet.
