I've Had My 66 For 42 Years

Men have came and men have gone but my little Mustang is here to stay! With that said I also have to admit I broke down and bought a new car in 2000 and had the Mustang stripped down and had what I thought was the best paint job ever, but as it sat covered up in my driveway the paint cracked all over and I can't believe how awful it looks. I am in Ca. and desperately would like to find someone who could slowly work on it and I could pay as we go. I would really love to make it my everyday car again or take it to shows and be proud of it again for being my first car and my last. The interior is still ok but I need all new seal around windows. It runs great and has a lifetime warranty on the transmission. I would love to someday have power steering or brakes but definitely not a priority yet. Any suggestions where to find a place that could work with me on this? I make about the same amount of money now as I did when I bought the car when I was 17 so that should tell you how pathetic the American dream is or was. But at least I have a job and for that I am grateful.

Welcome aboard Joyce. Do you have any current pictures of it?

I happen to know a guy in that line of work. He might be able to point you in the right direction. He also lives in Cali (north of LA, I believe).

It is hard to find a restoration shop in Cali. most have gone to insurance repair . Paint is another problem as most paints have now been banned .Water base has taken the place of paint that last for ten years or more .I gave up painting cars because of this . There are a few restoration shops left but expect to pay a hefty price for a paint job .

Cracking paint can be because of a couple of things ...bondo or the use of feather fill primer . I would bet it is the cause of the feather fill primer .It shrinks and cracks over time leaving large cracks all over the car . This will have to be completely removed and start over .

I think i would go to a few car shows in your area and ask around ,there are still a few that will work on a car for the love of the hobby ,but check out their work and get some feed back before you allow anyone to work on your car .

I think I get it! Let me get this straight you are a StangAholic is that correct? I would never have guessed! I talk to my car every time I have to walk past her and see that horrible cracking all over it, I even cry and apologize for neglecting her. (That's funny cause I used to think it was a boy) When it was my main vehicle I took very good care of it. If the seat had a tear, I had it reupholstered, looked oxidized I had it painted, etc. Of course I made good money back then I just didn't realize it until my 27 year job was gone. All of my friends bugged me to get a new car but the first person they would call when their car was broke down was me. You see I'm kinda in love with my little Stang too.
The place I took my car to have it painted was an upscale custom paint shop that did racecars, motorhomes, trailers, motorcycles, boats and jet skis to match I even saw a large truck and horse trailer with flames on them. I watched them and took pictures step by step as they stripped it down and used very little bondo it was a beautiful paint job except for what looked like a few bubbles and he wanted me to bring it in to fix them but it was my only ride at that time. Well I've already rambled on until the website timed me out so I don't want to have to type this again so keep in touch I appreciate your response. Where do you live? I am in Bellflower, Ca.. I am in Strathmore ,it is dead center between Fresno and bakersfield .
It was common practice several years ago to use feather fill primer ,i even used it once ,and regret it a few years later when i had to remove it .A lot of top end shops used it ,i still have a 69 fast back that i have to strip the paint because of the cracking .Black feather fill seemed to be worst of all .

I also wanted to say that I had heard from some other shops and people who had cars painted around the same time as I did that there was a bad batch of clear coat from a certain company that everyone was having problems with, but I think they put so many coats of paint on and maybe didn't let it dry long enough between coats but that wouldn't be very professional of them and I called them upscale. But as it cracked it does look very thick. Oh well doesn't really matter now. I am willing to help strip it or sand it or anything I can do to save money and I can clean house like crazy if anyone wanted to trade services cause I am a janitor and love cleaning. well I'm good at it anyway.
I am excited about finding this website and look forward to learning more about these cars and going to shows and meeting new Mustang lovers. Joyce

Removing the old paint is not a lot of fun no mater how it is done .
I would almost rather clean house ... No i wouldn't
I once removed the paint from a 66 Fast back with an air compressor and blower nozzle ,but that was a really bad paint job ...ever heard of Earl Shibe ,I can paint anything for 99.95 .The paint blew off in sheets .. Well we are glade to have you here ,join us at the Classic talk and Classic Tech forum and once again ... to stangnet .

Wow that does sound like it could be what was used on my car. I had it painted a midnight blue metallic it was darker than I had ever done it before but supposedly it was an original mustang color, it looked black but at certain angles it looked purple. But I always told my family I'd buy a new car when I was able to recognize one out of a parking lot that didn't look like every other car, they all looked alike and had the same colors until I saw the Eddie Bauer Explorers and fell in love. It was like pulling teeth out of my head trying to get me to sign the paperwork but my Daughter, a teenager at the time wanted something new that didn't squeak as you drove in to drop her off at school how embarrassing is that? She and the sales people worked on me from 2 in the afternoon until midnight when I drove off, but what sealed the deal for me was when I test drove it to my house where my husband was working on his 60 ford truck in the driveway, when he saw me started yelling "remember you are just looking"! After hearing those words for 5 years I realized I didn't need his permission or his money and my credit was perfect so I was done looking I asked the salesman "where do I sign?" The car cover went on the Mustang and the next thing I knew the whole car was cracking paint. Oh well, I need to move on and fix this wonderful car.
I almost took a job in Fresno several years back but I've never heard of Strathmore. Still not too far. Maybe I will see you at a car show someday.

I bet it is a hard job to do, can't use nail polish remover huh? Uh thanks for telling me that I was thinking 99.99 sounded good for a temporary fix and they are so close by and they have been in business sooo long!! I am about 60 miles from Fresno i guess ,i don't get that way very often .i do make it to the Cherry Ave. auto swap meet when they have it though ...even though it is mostly (Chevy ) Oh that word hurt !

I wanted to thank you for welcoming me to this website and for passing along the message to horse sense. This site was around before internet? I'm impressed. I can take some pictures and post in reverse the after and the before. lol! I think horse sense may be right about the feather fill but no matter the cause I still need to find a fix for my baby. I'm sure I will find it here somewhere, at least meet some nice people too. Thanks again Joyce

Did it hurt because you had to bite your tongue after using a bad word? You are funny! I don't think any old car is a bad thing. They don't make anything like they used to! OMG was that my Dad's voice I just heard? I am old! Haha!
