I just picked up a very clean '88 GT w/ only 45k original miles. The previous owner had done some minor "upgrades" if you want to call it that... From what I can tell the car has:

Aftermarket Fuel Pump (*loud* whine in back when I turn the key)
MSD 6AL
Coil, Wires, etc etc
removed/disconnected Air Pump
disconnected A/C Compressor

...nothing major, I should also mention that I've found some really weird wiring in the car but nothing that seems to be related to the engine (things like fog lights, aftermarket headlights, etc...)

Anyways - on to the problem I'm having, when I first start the car it usually runs a bit rough until it's running for a little while and occasionally will die (have to give it gas). After that everything seems to be just fine although I've only put about 50 miles on the car since I got it only about 5 miles at a time...

Today, I drove it a bit longer and it ran great no hesitation, rough idle, nothing - after about 15-20 miles however I was driving at about 45-50MPH in 4th gear and the car started bogging down and backfiring (through the exhaust - not engine). It felt exactly like it was running out of gas so I quick turned around to fill up, but the car already had 1/2 tank. Thinking that maybe the gauge was wrong I turned the key off to coast for a while. I turned the key back on, and all of the sudden the problem was gone - I drove it another 10 miles or so back to the garage and I didn't have a problem!?!?

Any suggestions?

Also, will having the air pump disconnected and pipe removed help or hurt performance / driveability??

Thanks!

I'm pretty new to Mustangs and don't know too much about them yet. I had an '89 GT years back, but didn't own it long enough to learn much.

A loud fuel pump isn't necessarily an aftermarket one. Usually it's a sign of a stock pump on it's way out.

Did he say it was aftermarket...or you just assuming.

I agree fuel pumps should not be loud at all so I am guessing fuel pump and replace the fuel filter. But in all honesty I say replace the fuel filter first inexpensive and easy to replace.

It may be like mine and be a stock pump with the sock off. I pulled the tank to put in a 255 and found a stocker in there with the sock layin on the bottom of the tank. The new 255 is quiet as crap compared to before lol.

Fuel pump/filter would be two things to check. The other is the IAC, they always cause cold start/idle problems. Of course it would not cause a bog problem
Also have you checked the spark plug wires? Seing that he just swapped them you may want to make sure one is not melting on the exhaust
