Just wondering if anyone knows why the K&N says it doesnt need a reflash on the computer but the C&L does. Looks the same to me, only plastic. Has anyone installed a K&N and had a dyno before and after?

I have been asking the same question, from what i have heard, the cold air kit will free up some extra power but not as much as it would with a programmer.

its all based on how they flow the air passed the MAF. the first ones out just put somthing together and figured a tune would recalibrate the MAF others like K&N AFE have taken the time to try differant size adapters and tune the airflow passed the MAF. i just finished prototyping the AFE unit for the v6 the v8 unit has been out for months my friend has one 2000 miles no prob. the first unit i tried worked untill 328 miles then tripped the light too lean. the second unit 700 miles no light and i even went to the dealer and its ok. so it works without a tune. i myself have the xcal2 with a custom tune to the car. but i have been running stock for the test. tuesday i am going to finalize the test and then the tune goes back in. the unit is great without as tune. much more responsive. but the tune also removes limiters and other stuff .

I have a K&N and no tune

There were some members claiming that it would do no good without a tune but my SOP meter told me otherwise.

Anyhow, after reading several posts to the affect that it would lean out the engine etc, etc... I sent an e-mail to the K&N. The response was that with modern computerized engine management a tune was not required and the car will not lean out. Next, I asked Predator and the tech said they are working on a tune for the K&N filter.

I have said before that the idea that the car needs a tune just because a CAI was installed is a little silly. It is hard to believe that the factory "tune" would have so few degrees of freedom. Just a way for the handheld tune community to hook-up with the CAI community and increase the velocity of their sales.

Another point, with the K&N CAI you are instructed to install the Hydrocarbon trap just behind the conical intake. Perhaps, that HC trap honeycomb design helps to smooth the air flow before it hits the MAF.

All in all its probably just a better "technical" design given the resources of the company relative to its competition

HC Trap

I did put the HC trap back. I remember the C5 vette up to around 00 so; before OBDII. All of them had a honeycomb like unit before the MAF that looked alot like the HC trap.

The guys that took them out ended up losing power or re-tuning the car with a MAF bypass. So, based on some of the posts I read I think that the HC trap is doing more than just recycling gases.

There is no power to be gained by removing the HCT in CAI applications, but power gains are fairly significant when tuning is added to any CAI intake system.

DiabloSport engineers have tested with many manufacturers systems and the gains are generally 10+ HP and 15+ ft/lb of TQ, all with lower A/F numbers then 2005 Mustang CAI systems with out calibration. These tests are on V8 and V6 applications, with comparable power gains on both vehicles.

I must say that by removing the stock air intake and replacing it with the K&N Air Charger, made a big differance in WOT sound.. I did not notice a differance before and after tunes with the K&N. BTW My GT was built June 6 2005 and It did not have the HC trap installed.

I am looking for a Throttle Body replacment, I want a better response time on the gas peddle.

My Goal it to get an Automatic Trans GT into the mid to High 12's under 2 grand and with bolt on mods (non mechanic type mods). Can it be done?

Nick,

When are you going to have a tune available for the K&N Kit. I have been waiting quite a while and checking you website about every 2-weeks. As soon as a tune is available I am getting a predator

Today's Horsepower TV on the Spike channel did a before/after dyno test with the K&N Air Charger(no tune) on a bone stock 05 Stang GT, and got a 10 hp improvement(255 to 265). They did replace the hydrocarbon filter after installing the K&N.

Every car is a little different but I think that they are closer to each other more than they are apart. So, I think a "canned tune" most likely gets you where you would like to be. Also, what if the dealer reflashes you car? Your out a tune then? or will/can the dyno shop load your "custom" back for $0.00 ?
