hey guys my problem is I have low oil pressure in my 302 but only when the engine gets warmed up. It drives down the highway at about 25 psi and at idle at 5 or less when hot.I've got 50 psi when the engine is cold. I've put in mechanical instruments to make sure it was not the original guage giving me fits. Wondering could it be the oil pump. shouldn't that either work or not work. I've also been told more than likely its cam bearings. I'm not much of a mechanic so help me out.

We may need a bit more information to help diagnose the problem. What grade of oil are you using? How many miles since the engine was rebuilt? Have you done anything to the engine recently or has the oil pressure always bahaved this way?

I'm using 10w/40 as for the milage unknown for I just bought the car 3 months ago. I didn't notice this problem until recently but the air temputure is much higher than when I first bought the car

Is there any strange spiking or otherwise erratic needle activity?

And I know this may sound stupid... Check the oil level. having a quart low can cause this situation. Trust me, I know

Are you sure you have the right dipstick?

Same here. Fresh motor, and cold I'm around 45 psi, yet once warmed she likes to go down to 15 at idle. Once I'm on it, it stays at 25 or so at 2200 rpm, and spikes up to 35-40 at 3500+ rpm.

That was with a 10w-30 oil though... I'm putting 20w50 in it as we speak.

yup,im using 10w-40 and have about 50 miles on mine, i think the oil is this and when it gets hot the viscocity breaks down.

BAD NEWS ...

The same thing happened to me (good oil pressure at startup and bad oil pressure when warmed up) and it was a combination of warn rings and a sloppy crank. The fix was replace them both.

You need to think about the travel path of the oil and what may be letting it slip by too easily. That usually causes low oil pressure when nothing seems to be holding it back after it gets warm.
