i took my car to the shop and found that i have a lower end knock in the engine.. they want 500 to check it out.. so i guess i have to do it myself.. could i just pull the upper and lower intake off and inspect.. or do i got to pull the whole engine out again.. that guy at the shop said it sounded like a rod knock or sumthing with a bearing, i cant exactly remember wat he was telling me.. so what should i be looking for?!

Maybe a set of 20" wheels will help you
I would drop the oil pan and check to see if you have any play in your rods or if they are hitting on something, like the dipstick or what have you.

I had a knock last september turned out the motor was dyeing. I just put my new motor in last month. I would pull the motor and check everything out in the bottom end.
so since its a lower knock, i cant pull off the intake and inspect from there? i really dont want to take the whole motor out again

pulling the intake wont allow you to see the rods or crankshaft. probably gonna have to pull the motor

ditto...
when we pulled my friends engine (160K) out, he had a small knock that we correctly diagnosed as rod knock...his bearings were about half gone, nothin but copper on the #4, and #5 main bearings, and #4 and #8 rod bearings...they were gouged all to hell and the journals themselves looked pretty terrible too. The knock wasn't really all that bad either, you could hear it as it passed between 2k-3k rpm, and the only thing that kept it quieted down was 50wt oil...and he was really easy on it till we pulled it about two months later
but yeah, if you hear a rod knock, it's time to start searching out options for an engine swap, or at least a shortblock
yea i just swapped this engine in.. my car was a 4cyl.. i guess this is why i got the donor car for 500.. good rearend and tranny bad motor.. atleast i could still use the intake and stuff if i just buy another block.. man this sucks!!

sorry dude,
you can always salvage the bottom end by getting the crank ground, rods resized and everything cleaned and balanced and drop it back in the cleaned block with new bearings and rings...
i dunno how much machining goes for in your neck of the woods, but here, the shop i take my engine parts to will ball hone the block, clean it, put in new cam brgs and freeze plugs, grind the crank, intall new rod bolts, resize the rods and clean and balance the whole assy for about $800...and provided the assy is correctly installed, all will be fine
