Are there any cons to using lowering blocks? I have read where some people have had to use wedges after using lowering blocks, what is this all about? Thanks.
The only cons I could really see are the changed pinion angle, and the lengthened u-bolts required. The u-bolts would be more succeptable to flexing. To rectify the pinion angle problem, working out what angle you need and modifying your lowering blocks to give the required diff angle tweak would solve that problem.
A lowering block creates a lever arm between the spring and the axle tube. The taller the block, the longer the lever. Under most circumstances this won't be an issue. IMHO, serious racers should avoid them, however. That said, I have de-arched 5-leafs and 1" lowering block and don't have any problems on the street.
Thanks for your replies. I will probably go ahead and order me a set of 1” lowering blocks and have them cut down to ½ “. One more question if I lower the rear with blocks, will it make the ride height in the front go up? Thanks again you guys always know the answers!
The front of the car above the axle won't go up, but the nose of the car will, pivoting over the front axle. It will be a tiny amount though. It would go up approximately (nose to front axle) / (front axle to rear axle) * amount lowered.
Lowering with blocks would have no different effect WRT the front height over lowering with lowered leafs.
