I have finaly got to the point where I hate my stereo. It just won't play burned CD's worth a crap! Does ANYONE know of a wiring harness that fits up to the factory one so I can install another stereo. I have the Upper Tape and Tuner and Lower CD. I want to keep the upper Tape/Tuner so it looks like I still have factory. Don't want it to work or anything, just want it to stay there.

Yes, the 460 system is "decent" for a factory system, BAD by most aftermarket standards. The bass in my '97 Cobra is already lumpy and dying/dead. Sometimes when I put in a burnt CD (CD-R) it will take like 30 seconds to play the song. It will just sit in limbo for a while and out of no where reads the CD and it starts playing.

I have a PioPremier DEH-P730 headunit sitting in my backseat that I havent gotten around to installing yet. It came off my old Maxima, so I too need a Ford wiring harness. Best Buy wanted to charge me $15 for one and $45 for installation.

Try replacing just the lower CD player. The one in my '96 was toast (just read CD's while making a clicking noise then spit them out) so I went to car-part.com and got one out of a '99 GT (all interchangeable up to '01) and it plays great! Got it for $100 with a 6 month warranty.

I toyed with the idea of putting another OEM head unit in but I want a nice deck in their with a remote. I'm not lazy damn it, I just want to be able to adjust things when the tops down and I'm NOT in the car. (i.e. at the beach or park with a lady friend rolling around in the sand/grass) I also don't want any issues with it not playing CD-R's

You guys might want to try Crutchfield. I changed out my head unit with an Alpine CDA-7897 last fall and I love it. They also send you detailed instructions with pictures ( for free ) on how to take your dash, doors and panels apart properly in case your doing all the speakers as well. They also send you the pull pins you'll need to take out your DIN reciever, not that a couple bent hangar pieces won't do the same thing. The harness is sold separately but it takes all the guess work out of installation and if you have any questions, their tech support is great. Give them a try. This is their add. crutchfield.com or 1-800-555-8151

Go here:

http://www.scosche.com/

The Line Converter is part number FAI-3 seen here:
http://www.scosche.com/scosche/electronic/FAI3.asp

The harness is FDK10 seen here:
http://www.scosche.com/scosche/connectors/FDK10.asp

I used these in my 96 GT Mach 460. Just make sure it is the same on yours.

If you want to fix it cheaply, maybe you could buy one of the new 6-disc in dash CD players from Ford on Ebay, I haven't had a problem with burned CD's.

I have had zero problems playing burned CD's with my factory '03 unit and I've had the car for 15 months of daily driving.....

You don't have the Mach 460 system and if you do, I'm sure it's a newer model head unit. I have an old one in a 98'. I have cleaned it and still won't play burned CD's worth a crap. Oh well. Too bad those wiring harnesses are only up to 97

i have a 98 with the mach 460 and the only cd's that are in my car are burned. the only time i ever had a problem with a burned cd was when i had one of those cheap no name cd-r's, and the stang wouldnt play that. but otherwise mine work fine using verbatim, maxell, tdk, etc and burning with nero.

Hmmm....I only use TDK or Maxell so I guess I DID get a lemon. I'll have to just get a new stereo. Oh well, I have been wanting one with a remote anyhow. Thanks for all the good feedback guys!!

Ehh, I've got a lemon too in that case...I seriously think it's something to do with the verts. I know my car isn't COMPLETELY watertight, so condensation can get inside and make its way into the CD player, so I'm guessing that's what has killed it.

Mine does the same exact thing with CD-Rs, pretty much started doing that about 6 months ago. Now it tries to crap out on a store-bought CD Ugh, this summer I'm definitely springing for a new head unit. I like the idea you have about the remote, that'll def. come in handy w/ the top down and listening to music outside the car!

Are you gonna replace any of your speakers too? One of mine (left rear) is starting to buzz a little on the higher end and sound like chit. Any recommendations for good quality speakers?

I had Rockford's in the truck that I sold for the 'Stang. Awesome sound. Clean crisp highs and lows and you could really pound 'em too. I blew a set of JBL's out b/$ I got the Rockford's in about three months.

I definetly reccommend Rockford.

The Mach 460 system is a piece of shat. I had it in my 96 GT and it sucked. So when I bought my 01 GT I searched until I found the car I wanted with just the base stereo, then I put my own system in.

I replaced the factory head unit about 2 months after i bought my 2000 GT, it was ok but i wanted more power and the remote option. I rode around with the factory cd player on the bottom and the new pioneer up top, but then i was in my friends v6 which didnt have the 460 and he had a neat little panel underneath his cd player, so i ordered this "bin" from ford for like 20 bucks or so and no i have a nice aftermarket head unit, and replaced the factory cd player with a "bin" that i now keep random stuff in like, remote, cd cases, sunglasses, etc.... Lets face it nobody listens to tapes and also my 5 speed got in the way of the cds in the factory location, couldnt change cds if i was in 1st 3rd or 5th.

Just my 2 cents worth, hope it helps

I have the 6 disc mach system. It will play burned cd's even though the manual says it won't. But there is one pain in the ass problem with those burned cd's - they dont come out when you push eject....
