why does everybody say 4.10`s for the auto and 3.73`s for the 5spd. that`s just stupid. stock 3.8`s can`t use 4.10`s correctly. the engine will act like a rock crawling truck because it is a low rpm power builder. 4.10`s are for ported intakes, heads and radical cams where power is made up high where 4.10`s are needed to compensate for lack of low end performance. or for some one who has a truck and wants slow powerful 4X4 abilities with their torquey truck motor

3.55`s are actually ideal gears for the operating rpms of a stock 3.8 or forced induction with stock engine and 3.73`s are about the steepest you want to go

i have 3.73`s and T-Lok on my 98 ATI procharged 3.8 and i`m really having trouble getting traction to use the hp i now have.

i had 4.10`s and they were actually slower the 3.73`s because the engine builds gobs of low end tq making it impossible to get traction off the line

unless you plan on building the engine full tilt go with 3.55`s or 3.73`s
if a radical engine combo is on the menu then go with 4.10`s or 4.56`s

the steeper the gears doesn`t always mean the best acceleration. if that was true then why not just go with 5.38`s afterall with anoverdrive ratio of .67, 5.38`s in a car give a final drive ratio of 3.60:1 which is streetable but usless at stock engine specs. i mean the 3.8 shifts at 4500 rpm and is rev limited to 5200. not exactly a screamer

don`t make the same mistake i did and just go with 3.73`s max unless you plan on going all out. even the it would be wise to swap in a 8.8 or 9 inch rear

if you do plan on a power adder ATI procharger is about the best out there.

and PTK didn`t stop selling their 3.8 turbo kit because it was junk and blew motors up. lack of sales for the $4000.00 turbo kit is what did it. and they blew the car up at 18psi during a test run to see what the motor would make which was i believe 482hp and 514ftlbs of tq. the stock motor that it was on will only handle 10psi turbo`d and 14 psi supercharged safely. no wonder it blew. the older single port motors like mine are easier to make more boost in because of the return type injection system(less of a chance of running too lean)

I love my 3.73s, and I have a 5 speed. If a tranny swap is the route your gonna go. I would say go for it.

why swap trannies the auto with a shift kit and 2500-3000 converter can shift far faster than 99% of people with a 5spd so all the hp you will add with the manual will be negated by the auto`s shifting speed.

that`s why most drag racers prefer an auto. and they are far easier to launch

save your money and stick with the auto and just add a B&M shift kit

thats what i was originally going to do, i was going to buy the B and M kit. But i wasn't just going to buy the shift kit, i was going to buy the transpak for 50 dollars. It says it give harder more precise shofts than the regular kit.

On a side note they don't make 3.55s for the 7.5" rear so if you wanted to go to that gear ratio you would need a 8inch rear.

97v6Silver

it came to $4.56 and i got $0.44 change from a 5,

and why would you want such a ratio in the first place with a v6?

you are right but lots of companies make a 3.45 gear for the 7.5 which is close to 3.55
