2 purposes, one is to give you clearance for taller valve covers that are somtimes required because of larger roller rockers, and second its suposed to raise your intake height mean, giving you longer runners = more lowend and the air is susposed to be cooler also because of the lengthening.
Oh and the gains are neglegible not really a big power adder in my opinion.
