If your HB started to slip, the timing light will mislead you and where you think your timing is set. Having that initial reference will allow you to get back to where you are now.

If your timing is way off from where it should be (your timing light shows something real weird), that's a sign.
The elastomer between the two halves is known to crack as it ages, which is what allows the outer ring to slip in the first place. This can also allow the outer ring to slide longitudinally (like someone hit one part of the outer ring with a hammer from the front).

Those are the biggies I look for.
