Motor Interchange

I have a basket case 1968 Fastback GT s-code car. bought is minus motor and transmision... getting ready to start working on it and have decided that i want to get it back as close to original as possible. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of where i can find infor of what cars have the correct type of motor .. as well as just any info on the 390 motor.. what are the differences between car and truck motors etc...

Watch your cylinder heads, exhaust ports are moved for Mustangs

Most any 390 block will do, but the truck/big car heads (by far the most common) are different than the Mustang/Fairlane. Internally, no problem, the cam is available new (same cam as the 428CJ) and the "S" code intake is all over.

Your car had a 10.5 to 1 compression ratio 390.(flat topped pistons with 4 valve reliefs) Same engine was used in the other Ford/Merc car applications but with different heads and sometimes intake (2 bbl instead of a 4 bbl) As for sticking with the stock iron intake, I wouldn't. These sum-bitches are heavy weighing in at around 100 lbs. Any aluminum intake (Ford made lots of these for the FE's) will let you remove 50 lbs off the front of the car.
