Mustang Broken into

Guys,

Not exactly sure whether or not this is a tech topic, but I had a question about what I should do with my Mustang that was broken into. The guys that broke into it destroyed the door lock and ignition. I am assuming it will cost at least $1000.00 dollars to fix everything. I have a $500.00 deductable. If my car is bluebooking at around $1300.00, is it even worth fixing. What is the best way to go about selling it if I do decide to sell it. It seems that I can either sell it as is.....sell it for parts, or fix it and sell it. Let me know what you guys think.

is it bone stock? what year?

some more information would help, as that bluebook value can change depending on alot of factors.

you can probably part the car out for more then 1300 depending on whats there, and how patient you are at selling.

depending on what's done to the car you might make out better parting it out. if you want to sell it i would suggest fixing the lock, or atleast finding an estimate.. it's not too apealing for someone to buy a car that was broken into and they might not want to pay as much because they will have to go get it fixed.

Yeah, that probably would have been a good idea. It is an 88GT 5spd all stock as far as I can tell. 120K on the car.

same thing happened to my boyfriend's sisters car.. but she just left it because it was a 4cyl that died about a month later. if it's completely stock i don't see you getting too much for it by parting it out. i'd just check around for estimates on how much to fix it/how much the parts you need to fix it are.

Ignition cylinder is like $12 at advanced, I had to replace mine due to lost keys.

A replacement door is about $30 at one of the local junkyards here.

I'd fix it.

fix it for as cheap as you can, and sell it for a couple thousand if its in good shape otherwise.

120k is getting up there, but about average for a used fox that has been driven normally.

Yeah sounds like it would be pretty cheap to fix to me. Did they tear up the door or just the door lock/handle?

fix it, most of the time when someone sells a stang it they buy another, i did

You'd scrap your mustang cause a pair of lock cylinders? I dont get it. Is the interior torn up too? If it's just lock cylinders and nothing else and you scrap your car over $100 in easy to replace parts, well that just plain doesnt make sense.

You can easily fix the door lock with a junkyard one: a pair of pliers to pull the lockplate out and slide the replacement one in. You wont even need to take the door panel off if you are lucky.

The ignition switch...junkyard it. Same thing. Drill the retaining pin out and pull the lock cylinder and replace and improvise a new pin.

You're talking less than $100 in parts and a few hours install at most. Worst case, just drive it without locks and ignition switch. Does the ignition switch still switch? If you can start the car, then screw it. Look, if someone has gotten far enough to actually be sitting in the seat trying trying the ignition switch....it probably wont stop them anyways.

But dont get rid of a nice mustang if a few little items are all thats missing.

I agree with crazy pete. If the damage isnt extensive then dont get rid of it. Who cares about the interior anyways, if the engine and tranny are still there youre good to go. All the other stuff is easily and cheaply replaced. Stick with it, you gotta be in it to win it.
