I was thinking of having an upgraded cam put in my 87 GT. What cam would you all recommend? The engine is basically stock, 3 73 rear end 5 spd

I want the loopy idle but was hoping at doing as little engine mod as possible as far as prepping the engine for clearance etc.

Was told certain cams would require piston notching but not others. Any help would be appreciated

Forgot to ask. Im having someone do it for me so what general price range can I expect to pay for the labor?

It's really pointless to spend all that money just for a lopey idle imo. Putting a cam in an otherwise stock motor will show very little gain. But, if all you're looking for is sound, you should go with a Ford Racing B cam or E cam. They are mild cams, that work okay with a stock combo, require no clearancing, and both sound really good. I think labor is gonna kick your ass, not sure how much it will be though.

the 87 stangs came with the SD computer ad if ur still running it i wouldnt even change the cam, changing the cam out will only hurt you, on a stock engine it will only give u a sound and not do anything if you dont have good heads and intake to match. plus it wont make as much vacuum at idle and will makes the SD computer go crazy and will greatly affect your driveability and how to car runs.

Unfortunately I would say stick with the stock. It is pretty optimized for the stock heads an intake. Anything more radical and you run the risk of loosing power actually. The labor if you have it done isn't going to be cheap for what it is going to take to change out the cam. It involves removing your accessories, timing cover, chain, intakes, rockers and radiator. You are probably better off porting your stock or buying an aftermarket intake though you won't get a nice lopey idle.

i have an 87 SD car that i'm putting ported gtp's and a crane 2020 cam in...you have to watch which cam you use in a SD car an sometimes it will take a few hours of running for the computer to adj to the cam...for some good info on SD cars check out www.50tech.com

Thanks for all the responses. Would I need an entire mass air conversion kit or could I just buy a mass air meter so the computer doesnt go haywire if the cam is replaced?

U need the kit...also replacing the stock cam without doing anything else is pointless, and to much work...save up and buy a tfs kit (heads, cam, intake), then change everything at once and be done with it

if you want to get into mods like that, you shouldn't be paying people to do it....It's not a difficult swap, and on a car this old, you better be able to do stuff yourself on it.

what you're doing is completely pointless and a HUGE waste of cash....I don't want to criticize you too badly, but it's very ricey to just want a cam for the sound, and do nothing else to the car...

it's going to cost you a minimum $175-$200 for the cam, and an easy $300-$500 for install...for that amount you can get gears and control arms and knock a half secone or more off your times, vs paying hundreds of dollers for something that may slow you down.

if you really want that lopey cam sound, upgrade to at least some gt40/p explorer heads and an explorer intake with that cam....btw the tfs 1 cam imo is the best choice for a lightly modded fox.

also, for mass air, buy the 4 wire conversion kit, the new computer, and the mass air meter.....or, buy the complete mass air computer harness from an 88/89 car and swap it in
