my car started on fire and i need some opinions

in the pics you can see that it was so hot that the aluminum intake was melting
i was wondering if anything out of the front would be salvalgable? or reusable in a future car?

we believe it was an electrical fire
that was my favorite car

Oh man, that really blows! Sorry to hear about it man, was it a totally random event? Looks like pretty much everything under the hood thats not iron or steel is not salvagable. I would tend to bet that the shortblock as well as maybe the heads (if you are lucky and assuming they are stock iron E7's) are salvagable. Thats, as long as the valve covers are intact and not melted-through. Looks like rebuilding this thing as an efi motor would cost an arm and a leg. How is the rest of the car? Would you be able to part the whole thing out (interior,etc...)?

yea it was a totaly random event
i think that the interior wiring is probably melted
but from the steering wheel back i think it could be parted out

except that everything was soaked from the firefighters
and when they did that they broke every window in the car except the mini driver one
would it be the most benificial to sell it in parts?

yea it is sad
i stupidly crashed my first one on 10/20/05
and now my new one which i just painted this summer now dies on 10/22/05
i really want to go older now
i have always wanted a 1969 fastback
maybe this is a way of telling me to go for my dreams now

i have AFR 165 heads on it

damn. I don't know man. There's a good chance that some aluminum that melted may have puddled on top of the heads somehow. To be honest, I don't even know how you would go about taking the heads off with all the melted aluminum and rubber everywhere. Looks like separating the upper from the lower intake, and separating the lower intake from the heads will be next to impossible. The heat may have fused all that stuff together. I mean, if I were in your shoes, I'd try to recover anything I could, you won't really know till you start digging into it. Good luck bud.

Man thats ****ing horrible. Sorry to hear about that.

Pull what you want to salvage and see if its still good. Thats the only way to know for sure.

I wouldn't use the body/frame. The steel all got hot and changed it's properties. I parted out a very low mileage Merkur XR4ti that had the same kind of fire. I could tap the metal with a ball peen hammer and bend it.

Is the car yours or the insurance company? I'd assume yours since you want to part it out. I'd pull the AFRs, or try too, may be they are alright. You won't know 'til you remove stuff.

car fires are always fun sucks it was a stang though. They made a good stop though but by the looks of it that didn't make much of a difference

I'm really sorry for your loss. I've been in an accident with my older stang and know the feeling.

If I were you, I'd salvage whatever I can, even if it means sawing through the intake manifold to get at the heads or whatever you want.

As you said, maybe it is telling you to get an older stang...just think, it doesn't have all the wires.

Even if they look fine, I would have some serious concerns about the strength of those heads now.

When you head up aluminum to near melting temperatures, you really mess with the crystal structure of the metal and it looses alot of its hardness. If you've ever TIG welded aluminum, you know what I mean. It is real soft to file or cut after. I'm not sure if you could take the heads off, strip them, and artifically age harden them.

I'm not sure how AFR does it because those are probably an A-356 cast aluminum.

I would contact AFR tech support if you want to try to salvage them to sell.

it was the stock wiring
me and my dad think it was the starter and the battery
the starter didnt turn the car on and just made a wierd noise so my dad turned the key back and then tried again and it turned right on but then he saw smoke as he was backing out of the driveway
at the house he was at they had a big fire extingusher and they almost got it all out but then it started up again and it was to late when the fire department got there

my dad was driving it cuz i was using a different car cuz i was only home for a day and a half on that weekend

i emailed AFR and they assured me that the heads will be fine but that i should change the valve seals

and my dad called me that the security in the area saw fuel leading up to where the car was at
so we think it was a fuel leak now
but i will never know for sure
