I have a 92 that has me stumped. I left work one day and as I pulled into the street, it died as if I turned off the key. The obvious went through my head. Ignition switch, coil pack, icm, etc. I have another car I'm restoring so I robbed some parts and had the icm tested. This car runs so I know they're good. None of these were the problem. I checked the fuel pressure and I'm getting 42psi and I've got fire at the plugs so I'm not getting fuel into the cylinders. It's like my fuel injectors just shut off. Do they have a fuse or something? I plugged the FI relay into the fuel pump and the pump came on so the relay seems ok. When I turn on the key, the fuel pump does not cycle for 3 or so seconds. Instead, it just stays running and the "check engine" light glows dim.
I dropped the tank to see if there was anything that might be obviously wrong. I changed the F/P strainer while I was in there thinking maybe that was clogged up. No luck. The only other thing that comes to mind is the PCM. I've never heard of one going out but I suppose it's possible. I've checked everything I can think of. If anyone has some insight on this, I am all ears (well, eyes). My wife is getting tired of taking me to work everyday. I'm about to say screw it and go put my order in for the 2011 GT. That would fix it for sure.

Have you tried wiggling the key? Occasionally the ignition switch gets out of adjustment. My 79 did that once, and swinging keys and fob would shut the car off.

Beyond that, I would try the EEC 4 troubleshooting routine or scan it.

Also do a search one here for not starting. Jrichker has excellent information for this issue.

If there is spark and there's FP, the EEC and EEC relay are getting power.

Did you try to pull codes?

As RD suggested, run JR's checklist. It's in the useful Tech sticky atop this page.

Good luck.

There's a fuse to the EEC? I can't seem to find that one. Where is it? Or is it a fuse link? I'm about to throw in the towel and haul it off to the shop and pay mega bucks go get it running.

I went through it the best I could. I'm no wiz when it comes to electrical so I may have boneheaded something. The only thing I really have is a DVM. I did see that I'm getting 12v to the injectors though. I did notice a reply to jrichters' post by willysteve that said to check the 10uf electorlytic capacitor inside the EEC. I don't know where that is and would be curious to look into that.

If you run the checklist in order, you will find the issue, and it will tell us what is good, bad or unknown on the car.

Opening the ECU is not for a novice, and not to be done unnecessarily. You said you had the EEC tested and/or installed a spare EEC anyways, no?

No hissin, I don't open anything I don't understand. I had the ICM tested and it passed. I installed it back on the car. I will go through the checklist again. If anything, it will give me some good knowledge of the car but I'll get there eventually.

What about "jumping timing"? How many miles are on the car? I know these cars have steel upper and lower timing gears on them (or one I replaced a timing chain on did). I doubt Ford is using nylon camshaft gears on any of these. Did you check to see that the #1 wire is where the distributor rotor is pointing to when the #1 cylinder is almost to top-dead-center?

I went back through the checklist again. I got to the part about the relay next to the computer. I didn't see any relay next to the computer located in the passenger kick panel. I do have a f/i relay under the mass air next to the f/p relay. I changed that with no luck. I know this has to be something simple that I'm overlooking. I just can't locate it. I have been through the checklist best I can.

The EEC relay is above the computer.

Hi.

First, you must get the EEC working. I won't matter in a a rat's *ss if you take the engine & sensors & harness and swap them out with brand new Ford parts. Your EEC is not working! And, in a major way!

One of the most basic operations of the EEC is to shut off the fuel if no signal is seen from the PIP (no rpm). Also, my guess is that you can't read codes.

So, you must concentrate on checking the voltage that goes to the EEC. You can remove the EEC from the harness and probe the harness. In fact, that's the correct and best way to do it!

Chances are that either the switched or the non-switched power to the EEC is bad. It could be many things. First, see which power is there, and then go from there.

Unless you have some electrical tech/engineering background, do not open up the EEC. Just buy a replacement if yours is bad.

Yea, I haven't touched those pages in ~10 years. But, your '92 Stang hasn't changed in about 20 years.
