It's pretty common. Mine goes all the way around the other way and sits there untill i rev it out all the way to 5800-6400 and it'll come back down the right way. Then is it fails to the stopper at 0 you can hit the trip reset button and that often puts it back to readings the revs. Most suggest replacing the unit in whole. It really sucks.
hollywoodstang:
If your speedo is not working, check the fuse first. The VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is a little AC voltage generator on the transmission. The gear may be stripped. If it is, replace it (it just pulls off). If the gear is in good shape, hook up your VOM (volt-ohm meter, voltmeter, multimeter, etc.) to it and see if it generates AC voltage when spun. You may need to use a variable speed drill to generate enough RPM/signal to read on the VOM.
If your odometer has stopped, it is most likely the little internal gear. Run a search and you'll find plenty of people with this issue and the links to find the replacement gear. "carradio.com" is one spot that has high quality gears for sale.
