The restrictor plate has been used at three tracks on race day. Daytona and Talladega every year since '88 and both the May Busch race and the July Cup race at New Hampshire in '00 after Kenny Irwin, Jr and Adam Petty both were killed there.

There are several non plate tracks where the top speed exceeds 200 MPH early on in the run with fresh tires. All of the 1.5 mile + tracks (Atlanta, Lowes, Texas, Michigan, Pocono, Indy, California, Chicagoland, Las Vegas) they consistently hit 20? MPH going into Turn 1. Granted, none of them have an avg lap speed over 200 as they have to lift going into the turns.

It is my boy, Mark Martin (who just so happens to be in a Chevy and now even worse...driving for Hendrick), who still to this day is credited with the fastest ever NASCAR race avg lap speed
The fastest NASCAR race was the Winston Select 500, now known as the Aaron's 499, held on May 10, 1997 at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama.

The 500 mile race had no caution flags and as a result Mark Martin took the checkered flag with the fastest average speed of any NASCAR race.
Average speed: 188.354 mph

Record for fastest Daytona 500 at 177.602 mph (285.823 km/h) set by Buddy Baker in 1980.

Hey, a fellow Mark Martin fan. I share the same feeling about his brand and team but at least he is still competitive. There aren't a lot of drivers that are as consistent as he is.

Right on, man I've been watching and a fan of his since '92! Him still being out there is one of the few reasons I can still stomach and watch NASCAR! He is definitely one of the few drivers that everyone strives to be. He might not have a championship trophy, but he sure has the attitude! It will sure be a sad day for me when he finally decides to call it quits

Jack should have never threw Mark under the bus. Jack started Nascar with Mark. Jack has also made a Kazillion bucks sitting on Marks shoulders. Mark could never get the big ring.

1 +9 Mark Martin
2 -1 Tony Stewart
3 -- Jimmie Johnson
4 -- Denny Hamlin
5 +1 Kasey Kahne
6 -4 Jeff Gordon
7 -- Kurt Busch
8 +5 Brian Vickers
9 -4 Carl Edwards
10 -1 Ryan Newman
11 -3 Juan Montoya
12 -1 Greg Biffle

The one I think is notable is Teresa Earnhardts car, Juan Montoya. The team that Dale Jrs dad started and Jr was driving for. Now they are in the chase and were is Jr? Glade to see Pettys team in there also, Jack has two cars, Richard has 3 cars. Stewart has both his cars in the chase. Should be a good 10 weeks.

PS.
BD Cardnal
You were right , the engine they have been useing is a Windsor, and I was wrong , it was not a Cleveland.

I agree with you, but it happens and gets proven year in and year out...great/good teams hit a sticking point and need a change of pace and sometimes the switch works wonders! Mark has taught so many younger team drivers how to drive a car "slower yet faster". Apparently now his team mate, Dale Jr is just driving slower... I hated to see Mark leave Roush and hook up with Chevy, but at least I can see him fight for a win on a weekly basis again I doubt he'll win the championship again this year, but finishing twice four times, third four times, fourth three times, fifth once and sixth twice is outstanding! He's even finished in the Top 12 eighteen times since '89!!!!! I'm curious now that since he's in a good car for a great team, if he really steps up his efforts these last 10 races??? He is good enough to win the Cup!

I don't think Mark has the killer instinct. If he was in front of Kyle , Kyle would put mark in the wall. Mark wouldn't do that. Kyle drives like Dale Earnhardt, the real Dale Earnhardt.

Dale Earnhardt Jr messed up when he left DEI and went to Hendricks.
Here’s what he should have done.
Went with Richard Childress . When they pull Dales Red #8 out on the track with Dale and Richard standing next to the car. Some one comes up with a hose and washes the red off Dales car and now it's BLACK. Dale reaches over and pulls half of the 8 off the car making it a 3, after Goodwrench is reveled on the hood Dale takes out a white sharpie and puts Jr just after Dale Earnhardt on the roof.
Then all that Black #3 stuff would be good again and his dad would have looked down and smiled.

I don't think Jr's decision to leave DEI was totally up to him.
There were most likely some behind the scenes politics going on between Theresa Earnhardt (Jr's stepmom) and Jr.

IDK about Jr driving the #3 car because he isn't/never will be his dad.

All those 88 fans think he's great. He is not his dad. I just think it would have been cool for him to be in his dads car.

Theresa Earnhardt is not real smart. What Dale wanted was 51% of DEI, Theresa said no and Dale walked. Her car is in the case, so maybe she is smart instead of not smart.

Mark Martin was a washed up racer when driving for Roush. Now just what is it that turned Mark into a winner. Maybe the Rick Hendricks racing organization and NASCAR backing. Mark has somehow transformed into a miracle racer under the watchful eyes of Nascar. Mark is no better a driver in the Hendricks organization than he was in the Roush organization. the difference is the team and Nascar backing of that team. Nascar has always been a Hendricks and Childress backed organization. Mark just proves this theory.

IYHO

I would love to see any creditable proof to the implied statement about NASCAR helping Mark/Hendrick win races, let alone any Hendrick's drivers. If that was the case, Jr. would be winning more races, as he is the sport's most popular driver, revenue and fan base wise. Childress Racing hasn't accomplished much this year at all.

I'm sure the same thing was said on the GM forums when Rousch and Yates were winning in the Tauruses a few years ago.

Mark doesn't need a killer instinct, as he is a very good driver. Using Kyle as an example of having killer instinct is crap. Half of the time his "killer instinct" ends up with the 18 car being towed off the track during the race. Adds excitement for sure, but it doesn't get him in the chase.

Hendrick
has the money to put into the cars and programs and it shows. Toyota has done the same in their program and they probably have the better engines of the field.

All this is just mho.

The Roush and Yates organizations win in spite of Nascar , The GM teams win because of Nascar.
The France family has always been a GM family.
Try to find a Nascar Rule book, It ain’t gona happen. Nascar changes the rules depending on what track they are at and even different rules for different teams, Sometimes Nascar has changed the rules in the middle of a race.
You will never find anything in writing that says Nascar favors GM, But unless you only have 3 brain cells it seems apparent. A few years back when Terry Labonte was driving the Kellogg’s car, Kellogg’s told Nascar that this would be their last season in sponsorship. Now Terry hasn't won a race for a kagillion years and the next race while everyone had to pit for a splash of fuel, Terry stayed out and what would have taken at least 4 extra gallons of fuel somehow magically appeared in Terry’s fuel tank and he won the race. Kellogg’s is still in Nascar, by the way.
There are a lot of things in life that really don't need to be proven and you just know. The France Family, when they roll over in the middle of the night, has to push Hendricks out of the way.

I'm Guessing now, but I would say if you Googled France family/GM/Nascar, you may get a hit.

I wouldn't call Martin a washed up driver. With Ford he became one of the highest paid drivers of all time and was incredibly consistent from year to year. He also did very well in the Busch series and IROC.

I remember the days when if Ford started to win some races with Chevy not performing well it wouldn't take much time before NASCAR made Ford trim the front valence or trim/add to the rear spoiler (depended on the track). GM would have to dominate for several races before NASCAR would make them change something or give something to Ford so they could be more competitive.

I saw that race that Terry won. I guess the magical gas fairy is the only possible reasonable answer you have for that win. It must be true, since you just seem to "know" so much, without a factual explanation. It couldn't be that he had a different pit cycle or the fact he just wasn't running as hard as the other drivers in front or that he was short shifting coming out of the turns? I guess you would need more than 4 brain cells to come to any rational conclusion?

Here is the reason the general public can't get a copy of the rule book.

Rules and Guidelines
NASCAR issues five different Rule Books, each of which includes in its title reference to a particular NASCAR-sanctioned series. Each NASCAR Rule Book is published exclusively for NASCAR members.

Back to the Main Customer Service Page

The whole different rules for different teams is one of the most asinine statements I've ever heard and is just pure fanboyism at it's best. Do you really think any manufacturer, team or owner would let something like that slide?

It's one thing to have an opinion, just don't try to pass opinions off as fact.

Oh, spell check is on the reply box and available to everyone, top right hand corner, not on your computer.
