Hello alll I need a quick way to troubleshoot window switch problem on my 1990 lx coupe. I thought it was a bad motor so I took it out & bench tested it & its good to go. I hooked up a set of leads to connect to motor once back in door. The switch will only work the motor one way, either up or down depending on how its wired. If you reverse the leads orks other direction but still only one way from either driver or passenger side. Its the passenger window Im working on.I thought maybe bad switch & I relaced both driver & passenger sides with a good used switch & same result. Do not see any wires shorted or frayed in either harness. I have a power probe tester not sure what reading I am looking for.

On the old switch:

When wired with one set of terminals you can get hte window to go up and wired to the other terminal you can get it to go down.
So... your door wiring is good. Correct?

With the new switch:
Are the symtoms the same?

If so, it appears that you're missing one of your grounds. How many terminal posts are on the switch? 3 or 4?

For window switch I have 4 wires
pink which is hot with key in on position
yellow/red stripe
yellow/ black stripe
red/ black stripe

window goes up wired one way, down if I reverse the leads. got power to pink wire. The window only reacts in one direction when wired thru terminal quick disconnect.

I had a few similar problems with my power windows and power door locks. After getting many different answers I finally just started to untape all the wires and found that the wires that go inbetween the door and body of the car (only visible when the door is open) were all cracked and rotted. I cut away the bad stuff and hooked it all back up. no more problems.

One of your ground wires (at least) is in bad shape and not making the connection. You're getting only one direction because when you're rewiring the switch, you're changing the location of that ground and completing your circuit for that connection. Use a multimeter and ohm out all of the ground wires to the body of the car. The one that doesn't show continuity will be your culprit.

What do you mean by ohm out the Ground wires? I agree thats prolly were the problem is but cant seem to chase down the faulty wire. Is it easiest to check from passenger side wire to the corresponding wire on drivers side?

The window system is a tad odd bit of wiring. Normally the whole system is grounded. Both leads to the motor are grounded. When the up or down is pressed, one side stays grounded, the other feeds the voltage. The reason it is wired like this is 2 fold. 1 the motor immediately stops when the button is released. 2 the passenger side window cannot short out the system if the drivers switch is pressed up and the passenger switch down will not cause a short.
