new 1992 5.0lx need some advice

well if you want to run the pipes the way they were from the factory just buy a cat back set-up. this will come with the axle over pipes tail pipes and the mufflers with the short section of pipe that mounts to the h-pipe.

I doubt there would be much advantage performance wise. Those 2 inch dumps are a little small though. One benifit would be that the exhaust is being expelled past your occupyed compartment. This means less exhaust fumes making it into the vehicle will stopped or idling.

yea just cut them off and weld in new tail pipes, does the car have flowmasters or stock mufflers ?

Ehh ... I wouldn't bother trying to weld new pipes onto those hacked-up muffs. For one, it'll be a sloppy job, at best, and secondly, 2" is way small.

Cheapest route would be to order a Jeg's cat-back exhaust (less than $200) and bolt that sucker under there. Comes with all the bolts, hangers, tailpipes, flow tubes, and two mufflers that you'll need. If you've got a couple of ramps or some decent jackstands and a basic, BASIC set of sockets/wrenches, you can tackle that puppy in a couple of hours. If you want something that sounds close to stock but looks/fits good and works well, but won't break the bank, you could spring for a Dynomax Super Turbo cat-back system. Otherwise, if you just want balls-to-the-wall sound and flow, order a Pypes Violator cat-back system and you will be soooooooo lovin' it.

Whichever system you go with, the end result will...

1. Sound "cleaner";
2. Not kill you (or your passengers) with exhaust fumes;
3. Be street legal in most states (dumps, which is what your current setup sounds to be, are a no-no in a lot of places);
4. Look better (just my opinion);
5. Mayyyyybe gain you a tiny bit of power by opening up the exhaust system a bit more, if the mufflers you've got on right now are 2" inlet/outlet sized.

Buy a Cat-back system such as Flowmaster, Mac, Maganflow or some other one. Maybe even check ebay for a used one if you dont want to spend alot.

I think the mac setup sounds pretty darn good thats what I have with 2.5" tail pipes. I know around town I get double takes from other 5.0's that run flowmasters the Mac's just have a deeper tone to them. I am sure you could find a audio clip somewhere online if you do a search.

I agree. I have Mac front to back on the 94 and really really like the low tone and 'burble'. Anything more and it would be on the verge of dump truck. I like it.

The 2 chamber flowmasters I have on the 88 are higher pitched IMHO. I dont like the sound as much (when under load) but that's a personal thing.

If you're doing it on the cheap: you have a bud whom welds and can find some clean used tails (new ones cost a grip), that's something I'd consider. People ditch stock catbacks all the time - I'd take their tailpipes or entire catback if offered.

Im pretty sure there stock mufflers but what i mean when i say the tailpipes are 2" is that the whole piping under the car and everything else in the exhaust system is 2.5" its just these weird short little tailpipes go from 2.5" to 2" at the tips. if you get this catback system you shouldnt have to do any welding.. it bolts right to your h pipe. its a do it your self kit... just bolt it up and go..
