I have the same shifter as he does, so I can answer your question. That boot comes with the shifter; as far as I know, it cannot be purchased separately. It wouldn't be too hard to buy some leather and make your own, though.
That shifter is a B&M Hammer shifter, meaning it functions differently than a regular PRND21 auto shifter. It ratchets forward and backward, so that you can't miss a gear or accidentally shift from first to third, or god forbid, reverse. It is similar to newer cars' "manumatic" shifters, except it's done mechanically instead of electronically.
The shifter has the same pattern as stock, but instead of sliding the shifter forwards and backwards to select a gear, you pull it backward or push it forward and then release. Each push or pull of the shifter will move the transmission's shift cable exactly one notch. For example, if you are in Park, and pull the shifter back and release it, you will be in reverse. To shift into Neutral, you pull it back again, and release. For Drive, you pull it back again and release.
The Hammer shifter also has a safety lockout for moving out of Park, and moving into Reverse. That's what the paddle is for. To shift out of Park, you must have your foot on the brake and the key in the "On" position. Then, you lift the paddle and pull the shifter back and release. The same procedure is necessary to shift into Reverse from Drive, except for the brake requirement. This feature is a requirement at NHRA dragstrips.
The red button is the O/D button. It functions exactly the same way as the stock shifter's button; it's just in a different location.
Do you have to shift it manually at all times or can you just throw it in D and go?
It says its only for 94-00, does it work for the 01-04. I don't know why it wouldn't.
