New Camaro

I got back from the first show I've been to this year. I haven't really been looking for one, but I saw a new Camaro SS there, it was this gold/orange conglomeration, with black stripes. Now, I like all musclecars. The new Mustang is wicked looking, Dodge did a great job on the Challenger RT, imo. I liked the smooth style they had on the last GTO, subtle, sedately deceptive. I was hoping it was just the pics I have seen, that in real life it would be what the other companies have done, ya know? But I'm sure now. Its just but-ass ugly, I don't care how it performs. Typical non flowing lines of a 21st century GM. Am I the only one thinks this didn't at all do justice to the 69 Z it wants so much to be?

Far as I'm concerned, the only two cars with which any automaker has gotten it "right" in the looks department were the '05-'09 Mustang and the new Challenger. Everything else (including the 2010 Mustang) has crossed that fine line that separates beautiful retro from hideous bastardized wannabe-retro. Hell, the new Camaro isn't just heavy, it somehow actually LOOKS overweight. The new Camaro reminds me of an overweight 50-year-old with veiny legs and leathery skin refusing to act her age as she squeezes herself into a short skirt, hooker boots, and a belly-baring halter top.

I think that 304 hp out of V6 is pretty impressive but I still don't like the way it looks, not to mention the blind spot and crappy visibility. The side windows are less than 12" tall. What does this have to do with 5.0 talk anyway?

We're 5.0 guys, and we talk. If all we talk about is 5.0's, we ran out of material 20 years ago.

saw one on the highway here in town and it was a dark candy apple red color and this thing was beautiful .i think gm hit a homerun with this thing

I'm about half way through, bro. There's a big "course critical" presentation tomorrow. Just taking a break from the preparations. So far, I'm doing well overall. I started off awesome, but the last couple assignments have just been marginal performances. The course is divided into two phases and on the first phase's comprehensive exam on Thursday, I got a 97% - the highest grade in my class. So, I'm sitting comfortably overall, and as long as I don't get crushed ruthlessly tomorrow I should be in good shape.

Because it's a military school for combat arms officers, it's all men... No women, but I'm hitting on Mike in his thread about 2010 mustang GTs... Come check it out...

I'm still around in the forums. I usually at least browse the forums once every couple of days, but don't have much time to post.

FWIW, I saw a V6 Camaro last weekend, and I thought it looked good. It wasn't good enough to buy, but then again neither is the new Mustang. I think the Camaro will do well. I hope that it doesn't hurt Mustang sales that much.

I think for 33k you get a car with over 420 hp, big brakes, and a 6-speed... Dollar for dollar the mustang cant really compete, that being said, i think the mustang will still sell better, but i wish ford would wake the **ck up and build a more affordable car that performed a little better without spending 50k on it.

Whens the last time that ford had a 426 hp naturally aspirated motor in a mustang?

The answer is it doesn't matter. The '03 Cobra made 420 or so at the crank for about the same price, came in at about the same weight, had pretty good brakes, pretty good handling, and independent suspension. If Ford puts the Coyote in the '11, then the Mustang GT will be right there with the Camaro in power to weight. If not, then I guess we'll have to cling to the GT500 in any performance comparison.

I seen a Yellow Camaro the other day and it was pretty nice, I really dont care for the rear of it, but it is a damn good performing car.

Well, then maybe its just me- the old Camaro did nothing for me in the looks dept either. It could run its tail off, along with the Firebird, and that didn't save either from the ax. Course, when their combined sales were less than half that of a Mustang that was aging by comparison, it didn't matter. I can't- scratch that, won't spend that kind of $ for any toy car ever. It snows here in Chicago, so a big tire, high power, high $ two seater(which is what they really are) is just an overpriced toy you can't use 4 months a year. Guess thats why I'm on 5.0 talk?

I like the looks myself I only saw a white SS fly past me so I really haven't seen one in person yet.
Its a shame about GM because the Z28 was gonna be the higher performance model now and was supposed to come with a 525 horse version of the ZR-1 engine. That thing would of been a beast! Who knows if we will even see a 2011 Camaro

I am about 50/50 on the looks. I loved the renditions some people did back when talk of the camaro was comingback. Chevy should have paid that guy for those. fornt end of a 69 anad rear end of a 70.... f'kn awesome. now...... eh..... hate the interior though and I am a die hard 69 camaro fan. hope to have a 69 z/28 some day.

The only EPIC fail to me in the retro returns of old school muscle namesakes is the Charger. Dodge just plain dropped the ball on the Charger. Four Doors? Really, Dodge? The Challenger, in person and from a distance just screams classic mopar in the body lines, and I absolutely love it. The Camaro is a sharp looking car and I'm sure it will perform well. I haven't seen one up close yet so I can't make a final judgement on it. I don't put the 2010 Mustang in the same class as the rest of these because it NEVER LEFT since 1964.

Here's what I don't understand... between OPG and Year One, and the various other companies making reproduction parts, you can literally BUILD some muscle cars from scratch. If GM, Dodge, and Ford have the original stampings and machinery, why not just re-release the classics, either just as they rolled off the showroom floor, or with optional modern drivetrains and handling? Can you imagine stepping into a 2010-1969 Charger with a new viper drivetrain, or a 2010-1968 Mustang Fastback with a 6 speed, IRS, and a GT500 powerplant or even an ecoboost... maybe even the new 6.2L monster??

No long post problems, it means you're capable of thinking more than .05 seconds at a time! The bigwigs with the stampings for the best cars they ever made are having a hard time getting "Made in Mexico" stickers to adhere to the cars, the cars reject those things like a bad kidney transplant! Having kids will make you appreciate the 4 door muscle variety alot more, I found out. The 07 Charger RT in the B5 blue, bad dog and I can keep my kids!

You guys both realize the Challenger is nothing but a 2-door Charger, right? Same chassis, same weight (~4050lbs!), and nearly just as big.

I was only going by LOOKS. As far as actual performance, only the Mustang has KINDA pulled it off properly in that it's a lightweight compared to the Camaro and Challenger (and Charger). It has a lot less HP than the Camaro, but it's not THAT far off in the quarter-mile because it doesn't weigh nearly as much. Last I remember, the definition of a pony car was supposed to be when an automaker crammed a big motor into a small, light car ... and nowadays, the only "small, light cars" are frickin' Honda Fits and Smart Cars, as everything else is in the neighborhood of 4,000 lbs. (might as well have a friggin' Lincoln Town Car). No wonder it takes 400+ HP to get these cars moving along and pulling off times that Fox bodies can knock out with half as many horses.

But again ... as far as looks, only the '05-'09 Mustang and the Challenger got it right. Everything else that's gone "retro" looks pretty wee-taw-did, IMO ... like oversized Matchbox cars with deformed features and ridiculously oversized wheels.
