new clutch and I still have TOB noise!!!???WTF

I got my new King cobra clutch installed friday by a reputable performance shop, yet I go to drive it today, and I am still having the throwout bearing cricket noise, and it feels like I have a vibration, possibly from the driveshaft. When I got my clutch installed, they also replaced the bearing retainer and the throwout bearing, why am I still having this problem????

Maybe they didn't replace it. I would take it back and ask them to inspect it. The reason why you have vibration is because they were probably too lazy to mark the driveshaft so that it would go back on the same way. Cheap ass shop

The DS and pinion flange should have been indexed before removal.

In any case, I would take the car back and have them make it right. It should come out of their pocket to make it right (if they did not index the DS, etc).

I wouldnt feel bad, im in the same boat. Replaced the clutch with a spec stage I, throwout bearing retainer with a steel unit, pilot bearing, resurfaced the flywheel, and have a steeda adjustable clutch quadrant and i still have the problem. I even took everthing apart thinking that it was the throwout bearing that came with the spec clutch and replaced it with a ford piece and still have the same problem. I took the weight off the clutch fork just to see if that was putting a load on the throwout and that did nothing but make it worse. The driveshaft was marked before taking it out and everything. Im out of ideas. Im just going to lose the stock flywheel and go with a king cobra cause i hate this spec clutch and see if the flywheel is the source of my problem.

are you for absolutely certain it is your tob? if they replaced it maybe it was something else causing the noise before and still making it now, such as an input bearing, pilot bearing etc..

I heard from somewhere that the reason everyone is getting the cricket noise from their ford tobs is because a new company is producing the TOBs for valeo and they aren't lubricating the TOBs correctly from the factory. I don't know if there is any truth to this or not, it's something I have heard. When I had a SPEC stage 2 in my car for a while I didn't get any TOB squeak and it was a plastic one. I have a Ford HD kit in my car right now and the TOB chirps at times and crickets a lot. Now that I have about 5k on it, it has calmed down a lot but is still there. My best advice would be to lubricate the inside of the TOB really well (the inner bearing part that is) with white lithium greese before the install (and the part that pivots on the retainer with the factory recommended greese). You could try it right now and see if it helps but be very careful not to get any on your clutch disc, you don't want it to slip or chatter. Good luck guys! and if any of you have any info on that company thing making the TOBs let us know.

yea, it is the cricket noise, I am probably going to give them a call tommorow, I watched them change the parts out though, so I know they changed them, but maybe they didnt index the DS. Either way it is pissing me the hell off, since I paid $550 for everything.

For some reason my clutch vibrated a little around 2500-3000 and I was really worried about it. It cleared up after I put 1000mi on it. I've talked to a few people this happened to with different vibrations and theres has cleared up after a while too. They might tell you to let it break in for the recommended time which is like 500mi I beleive. I dunno though, see what they say I guess.

Odd you mention the plastic bearing....thats what I put in mine couple years ago....Its been quiet from the start...and I was leary of using it but hey no complaints...ain't nothing worse than the dreaded chirp...
I used to drive Pontiac back in the day...Those freakin things ate TOB's....never could get one to last for long...

I would think your shop knew what they were doing being a hi-po shop and all...unless Jethro forgot to lube something up???
Did they do the pilot bearing while in there???

Adjust your cable properly and your noise will be gone. A chirping t/o bearing does NOT nesessarily mean its bad. It means your cable is not adjusted properly. Try tightening it, come back and thank me later

I just put in a king cobra clutch last week and having the same problems.My tob squeaks like hell and i get a slight vibration at 2500 to 3000rpm's.I also get a bad vibration when I go over 80mph that gets worse when I push the clutch pedal in.I put in a aluminium driveshaft with a steeda spacer so I'm gonna try and rotated the driveshaft and bolt it back up to see what happens.

Same here, I bought the plastic bearing and when I opened it when I got home the only words that came out of my mouth was, "it's ****ing plastic??" Come to find out 6 months later, I still don't have any squeeking and I really abuse on my clutch. The plastic T/O Bearing is actually pretty good.

LOL, that's what I said, too. I replaced mine with a ford unit and sold the plastic one... Hope I don't regret that!

just a tip.....if you want a king cobra to last more than a few thousand miles, break it in properly. im only saying this because it seems like you arent doing it. as far as the throwout bearing goes, you own a mustang. it is natural for the throwout bearing to make noise. if it is squealing loudly, it was not lubricated properly when it was installed. if it is just a somewhat quiet chirp, adjusting the cable may remedy the problem. i just did a king cobra, fidanza flywheel, aluminum driveshaft, steel bearing retainer, and tranny mount and no vibrations, squealing, or anything else abnormal. as far as your vibration goes, it sounds like the driveshaft was not marked before removal and whoever did the install, put it in wrong.

yea, I called them up and I will have to wait a week since I am in Myrtle Beach all this week for mustang week but when I get back they are going to check it out, and lube up the TOB and rotate the DS. This is def. a noob question, but how do you adjust the clutch cable?

If you have the stock quadrant and pawl, you simply pull up on the clutch pedal.

If not, you will likely have either an adjustable cable (adjustable at the clutch fork - look for a threaded rod with two nuts on the end at the clutch fork) or a FWA.

if you are asking how to do it, im certain you have all the stock stuff. simply pull up on the clutch pedal.

Unless he bought the car new and knows exactly what every shop has done, I might not deduce that he has the stock quadrant/pawl.
I only say this so he does not yank all day on the thing to no avail.

Perhaps leaving pressure on the TOB all the time (cable not loose enough) causes chirping/noise? When I installed my TOB, I set it up with a bit of play between the TOB and the clutch (as instructed). Then after a few hundred miles, I had to loosen the clutch cable some more, to keep the TOB off the clutch as it had worked it's way back onto the clutch.

I bet that bearing in the TOB that spins when it contacts the clutch wears out (and/or looses lubrication) if it is constantly spinning with the clutch, and the thrust pressure perpendicular to the spinning (in the clutch to TOB direction) can't help that bearing either...

FWIW - Mine doesn't chirp/make noise...

just something that crossed my mind when reading about the possible d/s vibe... if someone does a transmission swap, how do you ensure that the d/s will line up with the new trans since there is obvioiusly no way of indexing where the old transmission met up with the d/s since the trans is newly installed?
