New Clutch Needed.

How do you like your new ram clutch?

Time for an update..

I got the McLeod flywheel and it looks like an awesome quality piece. It's super light (15lb) so I can't wait to see just how fast the engine will spin with it on.

That said given the deal I got with it I think i'm going to up the ante a bit and get a 500HP clutch setup to have my bases covered when the supercharger goes on making my candidates:

1. Ram Powergrip (550 ft/lb)
2. ACT Heavy Duty Street Setup (566 ft/lb)
3. Exedy Mach 500 (525 ft/lb)

I have a buddy that is an Exedy retailer if he can get me a good deal on one I just might get that one, especially since it seems like you get a new slave cylinder with the kit.

I have also ruled out the Centerforce Dual Friction because the counterweight setup on the pressure plate seems more of a marketing gimmick then an actual performance enhancing item, taking an average of the reviews on the net it seems like they are hit or miss.

well good luck with the setup. I've never heard of any of those clutches except the RAM, lol. keep us informed.

Update... (sort of)

I think I finally got it narrowed down.

For the flywheel I'll go with the one I got already which is an aluminum McLeod lightweight unit.

For the cluth...... (drum roll)......

The Exedy Mach 500. Reason being theyr'e the only kit out there that comes with a replacement slave, They're recommended by Vaughn Gittin Jr. (I actually asked him about it), I've used Exedys on my Nissans with outstanding results and a buddy of mine can let me have one at cost which is a plus.

About that It'll have to wait a little while because the starter on the Z died and I had to replace that first...

I'll let you know how it works out.

I know you decided already...

I was considering the Roush P-51 clutch when my stocker gets destroyed by my supercharger.

I looked into it but decided against it as there are better alternatives, also the problem with my car apparently stems from the defective/damaged valeo pressure plate. I'd have to get another one and judging from the weakness of them I decided to go with a brand that made their own.

Which cut it down to Exedy, ACT, and Centerforce. Exedy I trust the quality and have a hookup, ACT is a great choice 2, Centerforce is too hit or miss with the crazy weight system it employs so I discarded it altogether.

I've been CLUTCHING this thread, waiting to see what you decided

Did you end up changing your clutch, and if so, which one did you go with?

Did you also do a flywheel?

I'll be needing to change mine before too long, and hoping to get some ideas.

I ended up buying a flywheel from McLeod on clearance which was awesome. I'm still waiting for the clutch because I kinda ran out of money in the process.

I'm pretty sure at this point that I'll eliminate the Centerforce because i'm not too fond of the weight system being a hit or miss deal.

I have connections that can get me the Exedy Mach 500 for a very reasonable price. I always liked their products and so far it's the only kit that comes with a Clutch Slave included which is great.

If that deal falls through I'll probably go with a Ram Powergrip. I'm not looking to make over 500HP so I don't want to buy too much clutch for the car and make it a nightmare in traffic.

I would really like to do a billet flywheel as well....but it definately adds to the cost....

I have used several Centerforce clutches without any problems, BUT I have also heard horror stories of people hearing a rattling sound, and then finding the weights rattling around inside the clutch.....

I haven't heard much about Exedys on Mustangs, seems like most people use RAM or Zoom, but I have heard good things about them on other vehicles. And if they include the slave, then that would be great, since the only place that I saw that sold a replacement slave/throwout wanted almost $400 for it.

Yeah, I do ALOT of city driving, so a heavy clutch would be a major pain. But anything should be better than the chattering, grabby clutch that I have now.....

Definitely go with a lightweight flywheel. I had that on my 240SX and also in the 350Z and makes a world of difference! Both of these cars are relatively torquey (unlike Hondas) so stalling out was not a problem at all and the gains in safety (from the Sfi certs) and performance is worth every penny. I can't imagine what the car would run with that + a one piece DF and pulleys.

I know a lot of people had great experiences with Centerforces but I also know a lot who didn't. That's reason enough for me to go with a different setup altogether which has more positives.

Finally Exedy is a great brand. Used it in my Nissans for years and they are stout and durable. That's what Vaughn Gittin Jr. runs on his Formula D Mustang and he personally recommended me to them for both durability and driveability. He runs the twin disk setup and he says that's real easy to drive on the street. The Mach 500 should be a walk in the park. Both the 240 and the 350Z got easier to drive when I swapped out the clutch for an Exedy and put a lightweight flywheel. Also for the slave I saw spec clutch selling those for 125 bucks. They are pricey so the Exedy doesn't sound so bad after all even if I was to get it full price.
