I just bought a 97 gt vert and don't really know what mods it has. It dosnt feel too fast. It has flowmaster weld ins for sure because i saw them under the car but they sound so quiet and i dont know if there the delta series or the 40 series. I also know that it has a roush intake tube and a K and N filter with no air box. I think the suspension is stock because its pretty rough and dosnt handle very well. I wanted to know if carfax can tell mods that have been put on a car, and also I think it might have gears on it but im not sure because it dosnt feel like it does. It spins at about 2500 rpm at 70 mph on the highways and the flowmasters really drone alot inside the car but outside there quiet. How do i check if i have gears and if i do what kind. I have 17 inch wheels and my tires are 255/50/17 i think.

Without pulling the rear-end apart and taking a look I'm not sure how to find out...I know carfax won't tell you

Maybe you should try tracking down the prior owner and asking them.

You will have 2.73 or 3.08 with a stick. 3.27's were an option with an automatic. If it has factory gears in it.

Put your car on jack stands. Take a piece of chalk and mark a line on the rear end housing and the yoke mount (part that spins). Put tranny in neutral and rotate the wheel/tire 1 revolution. Count the number of times the lines pass each other on the driveshaft/housing.

Just under 3 = 2.73. Just over 3 = 3.08. 3 and 1/4 = 3.27. 3.5 = 3.55 And so on.

As for what kind of gears are in in it....does it really matter?

3.08's were never available in SN95's. You have either 2.73's or 3.27's. There is a tag on the diff which has the ratio. Example, my car had 3.27's w/ Traction Lok so the code was 3L27. I dont believe Traction Lok was available w/ 2.73's but thats what the 'L' in the code is for. If that tag isn't there you'll have to do what TJM73 said.

There is a tag on the rear axle. If the rear cover has been taken off, it almost never has the tag on it. It says right inthe middle what gear it has. No codes or anything. It'll say "2 73". There may be a letter in the middle, so it'd say "2L73". Can't remember what the letters mean. As was said earlier L might mean Locker, but not neccisarily. If both wheel move in the same direction when you turn one side, it's a locker. The number are big.

There is another way.....

Measure your tire height. Go out and drive your car in in 4th gear and run it at say 2500 rpm. Note your mph as accuratly as possible. You can pick any rpm you want just note the mph you are traveling at.

Apply this formula....

GEAR RATIO = TIRE HEIGHT ÷ 2 x RPM ÷ 168 ÷ MPH

This will get you close enough.
