Well... I'm proud to say that this is the first Mustang I've ever owned, driven, or even rode in! When I went looking for a car to be a second vehicle as well as my bracket car, a mustang never even entered my mind. I was at carsoup and this white car caught my eye. It was a 1984 5.0 Mustang GLX. It was in good condition for $1700 and it already had the roll bar in it... so it was legal for Street Trophy. I said to myself, "Hey, I'll take a peek at it." Drove the thing and LOVED it! There ain't a speck of rust on her and the engine is sound as a pound! She needs some work and TLC though. The molding came off the doors, the convertible top has some holes and tears, and the clear coat is off in most places and the paint is beggining to fade. But, I know a guy who owns a body shop and he'll probably give me a deal on new paint. Since it needs NO body work, he said it'll be easy... so long as I stick with white. Not what I had in mind, but it's the cheapest route for now. The idler wheel on the belt tensioner squeaks to beat the band, but that seems easy enough to replace.
I do have some questions for other Mustang owners though. Since I don't know squat about Mustangs, I'm unfamiliar with all the little quirks that they have. Examples: It smells strongly of fuel, it has a hard time cranking over when the engine is still warm, and it had a goofy starter that needed to be ordered direct from Ford (a ten-tooth starter instead of a nine... dang chain auto-part stores gave me the wrong starter twice!!!!!!). It also has a serpentine belt and A/C. If I were to take the A/C off (since it cannot be charged anymore), would the OTHER belt (for cars without A/C) fit it properly? Or am I doomed to leave the A/C on it, thereby adding weight to the car that I really don't need.
Who knows? All I can say is that I've never been this excited about owning a car before. I ran against a guy with this car tonight, though it wasn't a legal race. He pulled up next to me in an Camaro (one with a V-6) and revved it up; giving me a dirty look that said he wanted to run 'em. I thought, "What the heck!" and watched the light. I smoked this Camaro off the line! Blew his behind away and left him in the dust man! I had a grin from ear to ear after that!!!! Now I know why people are so stuck on Mustangs once they've driven them. I know I'll never be happy in another car... unless it too is a Mustang!
