Newbie owner from accross the pond

Hi,

Just thought I drop a line to introduce myself. I've recently disposed of an 89 Camaro and a 74 Charger 440, in order to buy a 2001 GT (in Yellow), and I've been researching the mods.

As far as I know the current car (auto) is bone stock (apart from the bullitt rims, and other stuff that has to be done to meet UK regs), so here's what's on my shopping list...your comments are welcomed.

Accufab 70mm TB
C&L 80mm MAF
Rear lower & upper control arms
Pro-Am remote optimizer

Plus loads of cool ally/billet stuff from Steeda.

yes and no. Highest pump prices for 97 RON are around USD$7.00 a gallon.
But here's the rub. My company pay for the car, and the Gas.

My gas claim is going to be around $700 a month. But I do pay tax on that at 40%....

Hi Paul,

I'm originally from Rochester and moved over here 4 years ago. I have 2001 Auto too. I wouldnt recommend the mods you list to start off with. On an auto the first thing you need to do IMO is gears and a chip (stock gears are SO wide on the auto). It makes a huge difference. 3.73 or 4.10s there are a million threads you can read on if you use the search function. The chip will advance timing, (like a steeda timing adjuster would) make shifts much firmer and can improve the overall shift pattern.

A new torque convertor will then yield the best gains. Steeda pulleys are great, and exhaust work is also good. Longtubes will gain you the most but are a lot tougher to install.

All in all though, if you really want performance, and have a some cash, buy a blower. Youll get more power than if you dump the same cash into bolt ons. I'd die for a Kenne Bell.

That's in Kent I think.

main thing to note with my mods, is that the car will be a daily driver company car, covering about 25k miles per year. It only has 14k miles on it at the moment. So I need to keep it driveable on the motorways. (interstates). So I need to keep the stock gears. Chip might be an option tho'.

I have 4.10s and its perfectly drivable on the highway. 3000rpm at 80 mph. 3.73s would be fine. I you plan on lots of miles then Steeda Pulleys are a no-brainer - they should be your first bolt on. They provide a nice power bump and will save a little petrol. Better mid-pipe may also help improve milage on the motorway.

I agree somewhat. I have a 5 speed with 4.10's but if I had an auto I would stick with 3.73's.

Sorry, forgot to add that underdrive pulleys are on the list. I didn't realise that 4.10 gears would only pull 3k at 80. I'm kind of used to the Camaro doing 2k at that speed.

Congratulations on the car!! Are GTs for sale there new, or do they have to be imported? How common are Mustangs there?

If you want to really hear your car consider getting exhaust. Its personal preference though, and if its your daily driver and you're in it for hours on end you might not want it. But if you do, get some flowmasters and maybe an X pipe if you really want loud!

They're not available new, you have to do a personal import..same with LS1 GM's. You have to spend about $2k converting the lights, and that excludes the shipping. Fortunately, I bought mine already imported and registered. Did a carfax check, and it was OK.

Given that mine is a Yellow job, I've registrered with the YMR, and it appears there are at least 5 other yellow 'stangs in the UK, but mine appears to be the newer of the lot.

In the UK, the first main attraction of the year is the spring nationals (all cars), next weekend. I'll post you some pictures.

well then i'd say you're partly a lucky man...is 97 RON the same as 97 octane over here?

7.00 a gallon...wow...we are all complaining over here because gas is over 2.00 a gallon

good luck with your car though and i hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoy our mustangs here

Standard gas comes as 95 Octane, and is slightly cheaper, premium is 97 Octane, and the Interstate fuel for this is around $7, 60% of which is for the tax man.

wow 60%!!!!! i think people would riot here if the govt tried to do that..our federal tax is 18 cents per gallon..

You can run the cheaper 95 octane in your Mustang, trust me!

Actually, with gas octanes so high over in the UK, You could run premium and advance your timing by a bunch

hell-i always run 89 in my cars(with stock timing settings). i get better gas milage with 89 than 93. the lower octane fuels will burn better/more efficiently.

First of gets some rear end gears 4.10s, then a midpipe, i have a mac o/r Xpipe i like it. The control arms are a good idea along with some springs and subframe connectors. For more power you can add the usaual bolt ons, Steeda underdrive pullies and Timeing adjuster, Upper intake plenum and T.B., Headers and a catback exaust. But the Midpipe and gears will wake that stang up.
