Next Gen Stang to include 4 doors/wagon variants?

What do you think? I think it's a bad idea! A sporty/performance RWD wagon to go against the Dodge Magnum is not a bad idea, but it can't be called a Mustang or share the same front clip. In fact, I think Dodge/Chrysler have the proper model to follow with the LH platform. Each car has it's own unique style and name even if they are all based of the same platform.

I'd have to bet against it - Ford almost made a HUGE mistake when it tried to take the Mustang to FWD (Probe). I find it hard to believe (although not impossible) that they'd use the Mustang name plate for sedans. I sure hope they don't.

Even though Chrysler did it with the Charger, the Charger name plate hadn't been used in decades. Many people who have purchased the current Charger probably weren't born when the "real" Chargers were popular!

Man I had a 93 Probe GT and loved it!

I would take a all wheel drive, autostick mustang in a heartbeat, but no 4 door and NEVER a wagon!

To me, it seems very sad.

My take....

Ford is seing alot of new Mustang buyers that are outside the norm, i.e, non-enthusiast types, etc... so they figure with variants they can catch even more sales to the average buyer.

I don't know about anywhere else, but in my neck of the woods the local Dodge store has about 12 new Chargers sitting on his lot. It seems as though once the initial hype died down so did the popularity of these cars; especially the ones with the blackout trim and outrageous color schemes.

I really hope that Ford doesn't go through with this, but it certainly wouldn't be the first time that they crapped all over one of their sporty marques. Think way back to 1958, when Ford took the two seater T-Bird and turned it into a "family car. " Granted, it didn't have 4 doors (at least not right away, that came in 67 or 68) and was never made as a wagon, but it took over forty years to get that car back to something that remotely resembled its original roots. But then it didn't work because at least in part the dealers ruined it for everyone with their price gouging. All this and then we wonder why the "Blue Oval" is in such trouble in the marketplace.

I agree that Ford does need a sporty wagon and 4-door sedan in its lineup, but they need not look like or be called by the name "Mustang." They would be much better off to bring back a name like Galaxie, Fairlane or even Torino rather than to mess with something as successful as the Mustang.

I've still got my 94 Probe GT and still love it....maybe not as much as the 07 Mustang GT now, but it's a nice handling car

If they want to build us a rear wheel drive sedan they just need to give us the australian falcon. That would be all we would need. Don't call it a mustang, that is just not a good idea, look at the disater Dodge has had with the mistake they made with the charger. Don't get me wrong the charger is a good car, it just needed to be named intrepid instead, that a there is a distict lack of a manual transmission.

The Mustang name is iconic BECAUSE the car has stayed (relatively) true to it's original mission for over 40 years. Lending the name to sedan and wagon variants would be disastrous and inexcusible. Use variations of the powertrain and chassis by all means, even advertise it as having Mustang/pony DNA but PLEASE DO NOT CALL IT A MUSTANG.

I think the car is a great idea, but must agree that a name like Falcon suits it better if they can't think up a good origional name like usual. And yes, I would buy one. By the time one of those comes out I will probably have kids, and I love Mustangs... Solution, a 4 door car that shares much of it's hardware with a Mustang!

Ford does need a RWD 4-door and maybe a wagon. But NO WAY can they call it a mustang. Call anything else and it will be good car for ford. Call it mustang and they are in trouble

Agreed - their is a need for both style of cars. Especially once the Crown Vic dies out... Build it off the Mustang platform, heck use all of the Mustang parts but do NOT put the name Mustang on the decklid.

Don't forget that Chevy built a few(6 to be exact) 4 door Corvettes back in 1980. It didn't last, but they still did it. We can see where the Vette is today. I hope FORD does not take the same road as Chevy did in '80!!!!! The Mustang has to much of a rich history behind its name to do something as tasteless as making it other than a 2 door RWD platform!!!!! I also agree they need a RWD/AWD wagon in the lineup. The Falcon nameplate would do nicely as mentioned. It would be more tasteful than when the Nova and LeMans resurfaced in the late 80's...ICK!!!!!

If Ford is thinking about this, they are in worse shape than I thought. It seems like they are trying to drain their best selling car for everything it's worth.

And you're right, but Ford needs to understand its not because the Mustang name, it's because everything else they build is devoid of a soul.

Their answer lies in their European line. They need to incorporate some of those models and designs. Same with Australia.

The Fusion should be a rebadged Falcon, and the 500 should look like the 2007 Mondeo.

And Focus? LOL, if Mazda can get the new platform why the hell can't Ford?

I think the way forward starts with showing the North American execs the way out the door.

Of all the stupid things Ford has done over it's 100 year history, a 4 door Mustang and / or a Mustang station wagon would be at the top of the list. Talk about a bonehead move what would destroy the brand.
