+1 for Falcon. It's the car the original Mustang was based on so let's go full circle. Their were also 2, 4 and 4-door wagon variants. No toes stepped on. If they do decide to go forward with this I'll never buy one, I never liked the hatch on a Mustang never owned one of them either. Now if they do this I won't even buy a 2 door variant because it will be tainted with that fun for the whole family tripe the 4 door will bring.

I'd have to bet against it - Ford almost made a HUGE mistake when it tried to take the Mustang to FWD (Probe). I find it hard to believe (although not impossible) that they'd use the Mustang name plate for sedans. I sure hope they don't.

Even though Chrysler did it with the Charger, the Charger name plate hadn't been used in decades. Many people who have purchased the current Charger probably weren't born when the "real" Chargers were popular!

I had a 68 Charger, today I see the new Chargers on the road I think NO WAY is that a Charger. .Maybe an ok car, but used the wrong name. On the same note, we used to wreck old challengers for fun and lusted after the 'Cudas. Why didn't Chrysler opt for the cuda name instead of challenger....hack hack

The cudas looked better than the challengers, in my opinion only, and the challengers in those days were "the poor mans" cuda

Agreed.

Their answer lies in their European line. They need to incorporate some of those models and designs. Same with Australia.

I agree, but in the past the marketing of european & Aussie Fords has been less than successful. The German Capri (advertised as "The Sexy European"), the Australian Capri and the Merkur XR4ti come immediately to mind. I owned a 1977 2.8 L V-6 Capri that I purchased new. It was hands down the most disappointing automotive experience of my life. There were lots of little things wrong with the car and none of the Lincoln-Mercury dealers in my local area had anyone trained to work on it. And when something straightforward went wrong with it (like a power steering pump for instance) the wait for parts was long.

I think most of you are missing the point here. For starters, I don't think has any reason to produce a 4-door version of the Mustang. However, I believe their main point is to take design ques and styling aspects from the Mustang and incoporate them in to future platforms.

My feeling on the matter is that Ford has really lost its identity in the car market. What do they have besides the Mustang guys (and gals). You have the Focus, the Fusion and the Five-Hundred, all of which have no brand identity - they all look different from each other, they all look bland and boring compared to most other companies lineups, and in my opinion 2 of the 3 are major flops. What they lack is no substance, no pizzazz, and especially not one single character trait amongst them. For example you got Dodge (ok so some really might not like the designs..) but all of Dodges vehicles have that trait of having the same grille, lines, and asthetics. Nissan...well them too. Even Chevy I believe is trying to incorporate similarities between each vehicle.

So do I think its a good idea for all this, maybe, because if they decide to keep what they have now and not improve upon their small to mid-size cars, then I think their in a heap of trouble. Ford obviously needs a new market stratagy to get back in the ballgame - they have to start somewhere!

I agree vth, seems as if so many cars today do look alike. Before, you would see, say a pontiac a mile down the road, you KNEW it was one from that distance just by its front grill. GTO, firebirds, lemans, etc all shared a similar yet distinctive grill. So ford needs to make a "unique" design detail to incorporate into their car line up.

I hate that about Pontiac. I don't want 8 types of the same car with different names. It certainly seems to me the trend is "what did we (car maker) do in the past that can work now?" If that is the case bring in some more throw backs like people said- Torino, Galaxy, Cougar, etc. Use the S197 chassis, modify it and badge it differently. Hell, I would be all over a new Cougar (68 era) or Torino!!!

I seriously hope this "four door Mustang" thing is just a stupid rumor. Probably started out with someone saying they're working on a sedan and wagon with the soul of a Mustang and whoever heard it blew it out of proportion. At least that's what I hope

I agree with everyone here, a sedan or wagon that has the Mustang name on it would be just plain stupid. The 'stang has survived 40 years as a 2 door ponycar, why should it change now? One of the things that makes it such a great car is it's simple yet attractive design. If more doors were glued on or a hatch it'd lose that appeal.

'05 Mustang GTA?

I passed the dealer today, and saw an 05 sitting on the lot. It was sonic blue, which caught my eye, so I stopped and checked it out. (my brother is looking for a used auto, and that's his favorite color)

Anyway, I notice that instead of the "GT" badge on the fender, it has a smaller, rectangular badge that reads GT A. It also had flowmasters. The sales guy obviously didin't know about it. He paused for a moment when I asked what that meant, and he said "It's the program designation". I didn't believe him, of course.

Is this some special model, or do you think it might have been something the previous owner did?

Thanks as always.

Leave the Mustang alone. Something called Torino, if it looks good and has all wheel drive, I might could go for, for my wife. I'm a Mustang man, two door, for life.

I 2nd or 3rd the thought that Ford could use a good rear-drive sedan/wagon, but putting a Mustang tag and front end on it is just...... Ford peeing in their own gene pool...

If I remember correctly the GT A emblems were used on early model stangs(cant remember exactly what year) and the "A" stood for automatic. you can still purchase the emblems.

There was a Fairlane GTA in 1966 or 67 that had a 390.

To me, it seems very sad.

My take....

Ford is seing alot of new Mustang buyers that are outside the norm, i.e, non-enthusiast types, etc... so they figure with variants they can catch even more sales to the average buyer.

Bandwagoneers are diluting the gene pool... Ford knows this, and will thus dilute the Mustang name, image, and community by adding doors to a car that needs to be left alone. For all of you older guys who bought, want to buy, or have considered the Dodge Charger as a viable alternative to transportation, DO NOT complain when Ford slaps a few doors, extra taillights, and Clark Griswaldesque wood trim on the next gen Mustang... You are the target audience that is driving the down and out Execs at Ford to even audibly release such a blasphemous idea.

Ford is just proving to the Mustang community time and again that they don't care about the heart and soul of the Mustang brand. First they sue your ass for having Mustang in your business name, then they bastardize your entire enthusiast image by bringing up such a short bus idea when the money gets tight...

This is an even more pathetic idea than the 1993 Probe conversion that would have left Ford twiddling their thumbs when the chirping crickets drowned out the parking lot sounds of Ford dealerships circa 1994...

If Ford produces a 4 door Mustang I will probably just quit.

If Ford so desperately wants a 4 door V8 why not follow GM's Holden Monaro copy paste idea an ship the Falcon XR8 over here...

5.4 V8 with 4 doors... Sans the Mustang name...

This is not a good idea.

This is even worse...

I think Ford should just skip the 4 door idea, and go straight to 6 door!

Seems like an equally obscene move.

Sedans just never look right...

2010 Mustang Sedan...

Looks very functional, just has to sell well, and sits well with the SAS wearing crowd... unlike that afternoon asparagus that is seeping all over the fake pleather seats that they will undoubtedly put in the four door Mustang...

If Ford fiddle farts with this idea long enough, and doesn't use another name, Holden is gonna smack them in the mouth faster than they can say Commodore VE SS based Camaro, Impala SS, GTO, Buick GN...

I need to copy paste every one of these quotes...

So Ford looks at Chrysler bastardizing the Charger nameplate and decides they can do the same with Mustang? Bad move. Adding a sedan and wagon would dilute the Mustang brand and make it meaningless, pissing off loyal pony-car fans in the process. Surely they have enough good brands in the vault that they can pull from the archives?

I think using the Falcon name would make more sense, since that was the vehicle the original Mustang was derived from. But if they slap the Mustang badge on anything with more than two doors (a fastback hatch notwithstanding), they're digging their own grave (even deeper).

Did you see that? It's the last speck of light you'll see from this Supergiant about to implode into a blackhole. Ford is so much worse off than I could ever dream of if this is what they have to do to get a decent selling four door sedan. A collapse is imminent.

In the US market this would only serve to dilute said brand cashet (Charger). It might make sense to do it for export but call it something else here, like how the Jeep Liberty is branded as a Cherokee in Europe.

Fairlane? Falcon?

David Thomas said:
Um...yeah this is just stupid. This was probably one of a hundred such meetings. From what I hear Ford following GM's move of importing their Aussie RWD sedans is much more likely than this.

Calling it a Falcon or Fairlane (since that name is not being used ont eh people mover anymore) would be fine. But why muck it up with the pony? Plus those Gillette Fusion grilles look really good on almost anything.

scotte said:
If they call it Falcon, Fairlane, Galaxie, or Torino (but NOT "Gran Torino") , that might work, IMHO.

But, as someone who's had only Mustangs in his garage the last 20 years, a 4-door "Mustang" will send me running for a Camaro or Challenger ASAP, if not sooner.

It's a wonder that the Enlightened Ones at the Glass House who thought this up didn't call it "Edsel"...beccause that's a 4-door Mustang would be another one of (&, IMO, it would kill The Ford Motor Company ).

Think hard now Ford, don't you remember doing something similar once before? Was it the Thunderbird Sedan? How'd that work out? Let's see, Thunderbird withered away to a gradual death that even the most retro of retro styled rebirths couldn't fix.

Would it be too much trouble for Ford to just build an exciting, RWD performance sedan with Mustang styling cues, but call it something different? How little respect does Ford's marketing department have for the customer's intelligence, if they assume that people won't recognize a competent car unless its got a galloping horse on the grille.

Miscellanea said:
To dilute one of the only marques that is keeping the FORD nameplate alive is foolish. Creating a new sedan based off the underpinnings of the Mustang and giving it a new name is not such a bad idea. Lord knows Ford could use a performance sedan, but the rendering above with 4 doors and a pony is just all wrong...all wrong. As a mustang owner I have visions of a Soccer Dad pulling up next to me with kids in tow and throwing some "look, we both drive a Mustang" revs my way. Only, his is a 4 door.

There is no debate. Mustang is either coupe or convertible, fastback or notchback. No 4 doors, it ruins all creditability in by books. If you wanna haul 5 people around in your Mustang, tell them to suck it up and scrunch in or buy a Crown Vic.

4-door Wrangler DID dilute the name, pointless...

When I saw this I just could not believe it. Ford, please don't do this. It would be a foolish move. To try to "copy" the Dodge Charger path is simply more evidence that no one at Ford "gets it". How hard could it be to bring back another name and make a kick ass rear wheel drive sedan. How about the Falcon? As for the Mustang sedan, please Ford, for your own good, don't do this.

The difference is that the Mustang has varied little from its original form for 42 years and has a strong identity as such. The brand has only now fully recovered from the Mustang II, and it wasn't even a 4-door.

Make a sedan from the same platform - great. Make it nearly identical to the Mustang to play off of its brand recognition - fine. But putting the Mustang "running horse" on a sedan is gambling with the only thing of real value that they still have.

Forgive me as I parlay into stereotypes (as you must when you're dealing with brands). You see, it's all about chicks. These are boy cars, and you have to register them with chicks. A Jeep is a Jeep to a chick. It's a Jeep, or it's a Jeep SUV. A mustang is a mustang. A mustang four door? Houston, we have shrinkage. Girls will not care to remember that there are four door mustangs and two door mustangs. There will only be Mustangs, and the brand cache will deplete once they register mustang under the "four door" column. It will be too confusing. It will lose punch. It's like selling Fendi bags at Sam's Club.

Give it a different name. Market it as "inspired by Mustang". Call it a brother. Hell, give it a horse name.

But DON'T dilute the brand.
