Next Gen Stang to include 4 doors/wagon variants?

if ford reads anything on the internet about their idea, it does not take long to figure out it would be a bad move. read ANY comment about the subject from ANY message board or website, and you can clearly see this is one of the dumbest ideas ever.

Yea but Ford just proved to every enthusiast out there that they don't care when they began suing the aftermarket earlier this year... Now this news really nails it down.

Ford probably will take the shortbus route and alienate its fan base, leaving a rift in the Mustang world that would only lead to a weakening of the overall image.

Guys who like the idea of a 4 door Charger will just cream for a 4 door Mustang and even worse a Wagon... And the rest of us sane folks out there will just pat them on the back and tell them it will be ok... Might even wipe the drool off their shirt, and tie their shoelaces...

I can see it now, the bandwagoneer 43 year old businessman father of two that just bought his stake in the Musclecar lifestyle when he pulls up to CarCraft nationals in 2010 and gets the "WTF is that" look from everyone. His smugness won't even allow him to see that the 2 extra doors just aren't workin' out like he knows they are.

See I AM cool, I have a new Mustang Sedan with the flip down DVD for my kids, and the ergonomically friendly backseat for my kids carseats, and the extra room for all of the ghey Spongebob crap stuffed in the oh so roomy trunk...

Please dood, get a Honda Odyssey... because we all know that you driving around with reflective glitter stickers ALL OVER the inside of the rear window glass is gonna look extremly pathetic... Even to the parents that drive Volvo station wagons with the same glitter sticker upgrade...

The '67 Mustang had those emblems as well as the Fairlaines. I bought some not that long ago(BC Classic And Performance on eBay), but haven't had time/weather cooperate to get them on yet along with my rocker stripes. Here is what it will look like when done.

Maybe it's been said already in these many replies but Dodge/Chrys are getting away with like crazy. People are buying Chargers and 300cs like they're made out of gold or something. At least here in SOCAL.

I would never buy a Stang wagon or four door, but many would. If that keeps Ford is biznas AND they keep making the current two door coupes, I'm all for it.

If they want to do the 4 door thing that's fine, just call it a Fairlane or something. I know the Fairlane's were 2 doors, but so was the Charger and look at what it is now.

Just my two pennies, take it FWIW.

Edit: There is no denying the fact that the Charger and the 300c are absolute hits in the market. Sure, Dodge bastardized the Charger name by making it a 4 door, but they are selling like damn hot cakes right now. Then they came out and offered a SRT-8 version if you really want performance (I would definitely rock one as a DD) but still kept a line from basic to more luxurious and sporty. It is a GREAT idea to make a 4 door performance car or a wagon performance car in Ford's lineup, god knows they're missing a big sector of people in that market. It's been said before, just copy and paste from Australia, nobody will really care and most would be quite happy honestly. I hope they do make a 4 Door sports car and a wagon sports car, just not a Mustang.

All I'm asking for Christmas this year is for Santa to knock some sense into the Ford exec's heads because God knows where their common sense has run off to.

Back in the day Fairlanes came in all variants; 2 & 4 door, sedans, hardtops, wagons & convertibles. So did Falcons. Way way back in the day (late 50s) I believe that the Fairlane was the top dawg in the full sized Ford lineup for at least a couple of years. As everyone knows and has pointed out here, Chargers were always 2 doors. If I had been king at Chrysler they would have resurrected another brand name from the past for the new Charger, something that was actually used on a full sized Dodge four door sedan. Names like Monaco, Polara, Custom or even Coronet come to mind (not that I think there is any logic in naming a car after a musical instrument).

The local Dodge store here has about a dozen or so new Chargers sitting on its lot, so I'm not sure that they are still selling all that well. Maybe it's just a regional thing here. I just don't see a lot of the young Marines coming back from Iraq running down to the Dodge store to buy Chargers with their combat pay, but they are doing exactly that with the Mustang. Every time a unit comes back you can tell because of the almost immediate appearance of new Mustangs with cardboard temp tags on them. I'm guessing that if the Challenger were out, sales of that car would be the same as the Mustang.

As the owner of a Dodge Magnum SXT I can tell you that ours gets nearly as much attention as my Mustang, and it's not a Hemi. It's a color that Dodge calls Cool Vanilla, (off-white) and it's got the 3.5 L V-6 factory dark tint windows, the 18" polished alloys, leather interior and Sirius radio. The difference between the two vehicles is that the Magnum looks a lot cooler than it drives. But it still gets noticed, and it's nice to know that even though it feels just like what it is (a station wagon with a V-6) at least it looks cool going down the road.

I too would like to see Ford come up with something along the lines of a nicely styled performance sedan and a performance wagon, but not at the expense of the Mustang. If they want to advertise it as having the heart or soul of a Mustang that's fine, but it should not carry the name or galloping pony emblems anywhere like the Pinto and Bronco/Bronco II did. And hopefully Ford won't bo so stupid as to call it something and attach a Roman numeral II behind it like they did with the Muastang II and the LTD II. It would be such a shame if they got this one right and then badged it as a "Falcon II" or even worse yet a "Granada II." Maybe there's hope-at least they didnt call the T-Bird the "Thunderbird II" (but I'll bet they thought about it...).

Ok I love my Mustang and all but damn this car is beautiful.. I think if it wasn't named Charger, it wouldn't catch so much flack..

Ford Changed their mind...

Thank the Lord they changed their minds. They woud've had alot of people pissed at them, and the 4 door mustang and the real mustang's sales would have suffered. Not to mention a four door mustang is 100% unacceptable.

if ford brought the new falcon ranchero from australia over, i'd most likely sell my car for one depending on what the power plant is like.

I agree that this is a very bad idea, but I am not too worried about it. One of main reasons the mustang brand has the cache that it does, is because it has remained un-f*@ked-with over all these years.

As mentioned, companies are always experimenting with different designs, and that does not mean they will go into production. You also have to keep in mind that autoweek needs to sell paper, so they will print anything that sells. I am not saying they are misrepresenting the truth, I am just saying, you can blow things out of proportion a bit.

Is that the Mustang Wagon pictured? It looks more like a Mustang Fastback, which we all know, would be extremely popular.

I would also love to see a Ford Falcon in the states. I think the Chargers/Magnums have been a huge hit for Dodge. I see all sorts of them on the road. If there are any sitting on lots, its probably just because they are a bit long-in-the-tooth. I dont think Ford would go wrong to compete for this segment, with V8 powered muscle sedans and wagons. Just not mustangs. Ford Falcon is a good idea.

They need to make a new Maverick and call it a day.

that would be sweet. put the same drive train as the mustang in it, just make it smaller.

i just want ford to be putting bigger cube motors in the cars. one of the newer vettes have a 427 in it i think.

make a mustang model that has a huge v8 in it.

i know i can't compare a vette and a mustang that much, because the camaros always been the competition with the stang. but even the ford gt only has a 5.4 liter. and i don't consider them in the same class as much. simply cause you see a million vettes on the road. how many gts do you see.



the only thing is the cars better look like their names. like a fairlane better slightly resemble a fairlane, not the fairlane concept that is now the ford flex.

I've been saying since it was made but the 2 door focus with a v8 would be nasty. Anyone ever catch the focus SVT built when the 03-04 cobra came out? it was a focus with a 03 cobra motor, transmission, and irs. pretty nasty show car.

yeah i saw that, i never saw a video of it running though, i can imagine it being crazy.

i wish the focus was rear wheel drive, that would make swaps like that pretty common, and probably a little cheaper. so there would be more interest.
