I have and '86 silverado work truck/winter beater with a 305 that has been giving me warm start issues lately. Once the engine is warmed up, and I stop to get gas, and restart it within 5 minutes, I have never had an issue. If I go to get groceries, get a haircut, or do something else that takes 20-40 minutes I can't get it to restart; didn't actually check for spark, but I'm guessing since ether doesn't fix the problem that it's something in the HEI that causes trouble once it's warm. If I let the truck sit for more than an hour so it can cool, it always restarts. I'm not familiar with HEI and was hoping someone could give me some tips on troubleshooting this problem. Thanks.

I don't think it is an HEI problem. I'd start by checking to see if the starter is hot. Veyr common problem amongst the SBCs

This is a very common problem with Chebby... the starter gets heat soaked after the engine warms and will not start until it cools down. Happened to the 67 427 Caprice we have too.

If it cranks but won't start look towards the module or pick -up coil. 9 times out'a 10....

FYI: The cranks OK but no start checklist for Mustangs can be used to give you ideas for things to check. The Mustang specific items won't be of any use, but the stepped troubleshooting plan works for any EFI engine.

First up, I would try to drive around, and then check it in the driveway. If you have no spark hot, then try changing the HEI module, then the coil. If that does not do it, try the pickup coil. The tests for an Hei are simple, but I don't have them handy. Had the last one about 7 years ago.

Durasparks will do this to, and it sometimes will be the pickup coil in the dist.

Thanks guys. It's definitely not the starter; cranks just fine. It just won't pop off. I'll rob a coil and HEI module off my dads truck and see if it eliminates my problem upon warm restart........thanks again everyone.
