It appears Ford will again come out on top in 2005 with the F-150 in terms of sales, so what better way to celebrate than with a gargantuan truck concept sporting some trick powerplant technology. The Ford Super Chief runs on the world’s first Tri-Flex fuel engine, a supercharged V10 capable of running on hydrogen, E85 or gasoline.

Ford claims this type of engine makes perfect sense as an interim powerplant until the nation builds a proper infrastructure for the commercial delivery of E85 and in the future hydrogen. When the Tri-Flex V10 is running on hydrogen it achieves a 12% improvement in fuel economy over a non-S/C gas V10 and can go 500 miles between fill ups. the super charger only engages when the hydrogen fuel is being used

Can't say I would call it progress. None of the technology is new. And what better way to show the world how much we care by building a GIANT LUXO-Barge Truck that nobody needs. Yes it may burn cleaner and use alternative fuels but my guess is it still gets downright ****ty mileage.

While towing trailers current gasoline v-10's get about 3-5 mpg, WOOHOO!

my buddy gets 9 towing his 32 foot toy box and 12-15 empty

besides all that- tri- fuel is impressive!

You're bragging about 9mpg? Jeez I wish I paid as little for gas as you do...I get 50mpg from my daily driver and it still hurts when I have to fill up.

The Big Three - our favorite one this time - once again reveals its profound lack of market savvy, while the Japanese pump out hybrids that people wait in line for months for, the best Billy Ford can come up with is this monstrosity? Certain this is supposed to be in the talk section... Sorry for the rant.

I wholeheartedly agree with you there. I wonder why people fall all over themselves for the little hybrid cars when you can get equal or better performance out of a VW TDI for less money. On top of that you can go to any VW dealer and drive it home NOW, no waiting.

No it's a FORD. Mondeo Turbo Diesel - it's as quick as it needs to be: 0-60 in around 10 seconds, will do way over 130mph, and will do over 500 miles between fill ups. As a daily driver, it's all I could ask for.

I know you Yanks will never get the idea of diesel cars, but when your gas prices get to our level, you'll embrace the oil burner.

Ok so its a barge...anybody else have a 3 fuel engine? Who is to say they won't drop a 4 banger model of this into a focus and get 50 mpg?

I know I'm bringing this back from the dead, but a Focus should get at least 40mpg without all this "tri-fuel" crap. Hybrids are a HUGE scam as well.

I drive a '91 Civic that topped out at 41mpg and never went below 38. It doesnt have overdrive or sequential injection. Its also 15 years old already. The technology for extreme economy has been around for at least 20 years.

Volkwagen has this thing called a Lupo that I'm sure Limey66 knows all about. Its available with a 1.7L TDI engine that gets 64mpg. I think the best a Honda Insight ever managed was in the low 70s.

Sweet, The best thing a struggling company can do... celebrate a good selling product by blowing a ton of money on something that has no purpose. I wish the people that were responsible for blowing money on making this truck would talk to the 30,000 people that Ford is about to layoff and ask them their opinion of this truck. I realize that all American automakers do this however maybe its time direct that money into more useful things…..

Yeah, we got a ton of 'em over here Lupos, Golfs, even the big Audi A6 gets 140bhp from it's 2 litre turbo diesel, and returns in excess of 40mpg.

No manufacturer can survive in the European market without a diesel - you can even get diesel Jag now...

Wow i didnt know you could use a freaking VW rabit as a work truck. Come on guys you guys keep talking aut 40+ miles to the gal. There is no way you can get that in a truck. Then you say what do we need big trucks for. I have been in the wildland firefighting busines, house framing, construction, and earth moving. And no a freaking small rig is going to cut it. So dont go bashing on big trucks. There is a need for them. Yes we will probobly all agree that hydro engines and the like have been around for a while, but not in a large scale production or in trucks for that matter. So the way i look at it, it is a tech advance.

1. You've never seen a VW Rabbit truck? They made them, and even sold them here in the US.

2. I personally dont expect to get 40mpg in a full sized truc. What I DO expect is for carmakers to at least attempt to get better than 16mpg with a gasoline engine.

3. I dont think anyone can deny the usefulness of large trucks/utility vehicles, but how about all those yuppies driving Suburbans, Hummers, trucks, and Excursions to drop off the kids at soccer practice? That is an enormous waste of energy.

Don't go getting your panties in a bunch. I am not "bashing" all big trucks. Big diesel trucks definitely have a place. I use them everyday at work. What I don't understand is the need for these giant "luxury" barges that the big three keep trying to outdo each other with. I mean come on the truck at the top of this thread has backwards and forward facing rear seats, leather, blah, blah, blah, blah. That type of stuff is just garbage. I don't know if you have looked for a work truck lately but the chances of finding a basic new work truck are slim to none and if you do it isn't much of a deal.

The guys that need trucks don't need DVD navigation, stained wooden beds, 20" wheels, leather interior, and they don't need $30,000.00 and up stickers either.
