This is boat related. However, my boat does have a 2.3L Ford Tempo motor in it. (stock to boat) 17'
Just wanted to know if anyone has expierence with winterizing the engine. This is my 1st boat and gonna be our 1st winter with it. What do I need to do
Im in Charleston and we more than likey not get any kinda snow, but temps will get to freezing. Any help will be appreciated.
It is not EFI but carbed.

You'll need to run some Sta-bil through the tank and into the carb so you don't gum up the jets.

I'm not sure how the cooling system / antifreeze would work on it since I prefer the wind powered kind of boats.

I guess I need to drain the block of all the water then put a mixture of coolant and water back into it?? How would I drain all the water out, could I just crank the boat without the hose hooked to it, would the pump-pump all the water out?? then put the coolant back in thru the thermostat location?

Stabil in Gas tank 1st.

Run the motor with hose and water attached as not to burn up the impeller. When the motor is running, change the hose over to a bucket full of RV antifreeze and let the motor suck it in and run it through. If it doesnt suck up any antifreeze*

I would also advise you to pull the plugs on the heads, manifolds and intake to drain out any water and sediment that has gotten stuck up in there. Use a coat hanger to get up in there and pull out the crap and drain the rest of the water. Its usually a mess. The plugs are like a petcock looking thing:

* dump some of the antifreeze into the hoses in front by the thermostat after you clean out the petcocks and close them up.

After the thing cools down a bit, fog the cylinders and crank the motor a couple times to coat the cylinders.

Pull the battery or trickle charge it and cover it up good.

That is all.

I'm on your side with the wind power! The 27 footer has that damn Atomic Four and the Chris Craft has the 4.3liter that I just finished up on. Man, I miss the days of trailer sailers! I did just sell the 22 footer though! Time to get a new laser!

Like I stated im new to this. Now you say run water to it like you normally would with the boat outta the water right? Then switch the hose to a bucket of A/F (RV)?? Dont laugh but the pitcure I get is turn the water on and crank the engine, once there is a good flow of water disconnect the hose from the *****et @ the house and put the end of the hose immediatly in a bucket of A/F? Turn engine off when I see A/f coming out.

You are close. I have a 5 gallon bucket with a valve and a hose on it. Have the same connector that the garden hose has on it on the end so when you disconnect the garden hose, you can plug in the bucket hose, open the valve and wait until the antifreeze gets sucked from the bucket into the motor. You will see it come out the exhaust when its good to go. If the motor never sucks up the pink stuff, do the hose trick from the first post. Let me know if you have any more questions!

both my bucaneer (18) and mutineer (15) are out of the water, on their trailers and awaiting next spring at wamplers when it's too cold out and very windy [i.e. there are no boats out yet.... ]

I love being the first. Congrats on the sale (no pun intended) A friend of mine is looking to buy a lightning (?) I think it's a 22 footer as well.

Yeah there are a lot of lightning around Clark Lake and Devils Lake over there. They still have active fleets and regattas there. IIRC they still run some buccaneer regattas from time to time.

Being out in the nasty waves and wind when it is still cold is the best part. when you get back in you have a whole new appreciation for the water. Plus, you can get a refresher course real quick out in that stuff.

OK I will mess with it this weekend ............ Maybe, the weather here is so up and down, that we may put it back in the water this weekend. Gonna be 79 degrees today.

LOL - it was 60 over here in Detroit! But for the rest of the week it'll be in the low 40's for the high and low 30's for the low. YUCK!

we (father / son team) participate in the Buccaneer class association races when we can. We were on clark lake in September, Lake Michigan last summer.... It's pretty fun even though we are slow. I just enjoy seeing a bunch of the same boats on the water at the same time.

Gotta love the South Yea im in shorts and a polo short sleave shirt @ work today. Last week we did get in the 40's, BURRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I dont like the cold.
