I have 93 with a carbed 351W with duraspark ign., had it running about a year ago, but changed transmissions and slowly but surley got it started last night. When it started it had that high pitched noise for a few seconds and would stop. then when I gased it a little it would make the same noise..fan belt??.....but after I had it running for about 5 minutes I saw a spark and smoke near the starter relay. I turned it off and tried starting it up again about 5 min later. It would turn over but not start, and I noticed the battery light was on. And I also had a battery charger on while the car was running...????......bad belt and alternator??? ...Any Ideas?

The alternator has a fuse link in the area of the stater solenoid. Check for 12 volts at the alternator power feed connection with the engine off. The black/orange wires are the power feed for the stock alternator. No 12 volts on the alternator end of the black/orage wires, the fuse link has blown. A test light is even better than a voltmeter for this test. One lead to ground and the other lead to the alternator end of the black/orange wires.
