Ohio Collector plates law/rule?

Your car only qualifes if the mileage is under the average 12-15k per year, you have $5000 in upgrade modifications, which does not include maintenance items. (Brake pads, rotors, shocks/struts, etc.) It was a lot harder than I had though to get to the 5K mark. They consider many things maintenance. They also want pictures of your car and all the mods you send receipts for. This was the easy part. Also, you have to send in proof of ownership of another vehicle. They don't want you drivin your collector daily. And yes, no more smog with collectors. I just applied, I got accepted, but I mailed in 17K worth of MODS. Only 8700 counted. I might have fudged the numbers a bit with a Paint receipt for my GT that was 4800 bucks, but it was a mustang that was painted. I don't like to lie, but I believed my car was worthy of Ohio Collectors. Less than 2k a year on the odometer.

I didn't have to worry about smog anyway. I am active duty - exempt. I have my car registered in Ashtabula - no smog in that county, now I have Collectors - exemt

I think it is worth it if you qualify. You just have to mail of to Columbus for you renewal every year. Ohio now lets you get a 2 year renewal instead of a 1year.

You have to call about the 5K thing. They don't advertise it. They are very nice at the BMV in Southern Ohio. Wish it was the same where I was from in the Northeast. GOOD LUCK................................

You have to have another vehicle registered and insured in your name, or they will not except your application. They do call the insurance company too. Obviously they can look up your registration history. They are pretty tough on this stuff. They think everyone is out for a free ride.

I had to have my car smogged for it to work. I register my cars in Ohio, and they have a form for active duty members that allow you to be exempt as long as you pass one smog cycle. I just send my Mother the info with a power of attourny, copy of my ID, and a copy of my current orders, and the smog, and exemption form. Then I got Ohio plates, and a smog exemption certificate that expires when my military ID does. I just got my collector plates, so now I don't have to have the exemption anyhow. Kind of a pain in the butt. Worth it in the end though.
