Ok, the other day I was thinking..

you know how you can get those little FM modulators for ur I-pod or portable cd-player that play the music through a certain FM station?

Well, what I wanna do is combine a CB radio with an EXTEREMLY strong FM modulator. By this I mean, I want to have a little microphone in my car and be able to send messages to every car with-in a 75ft radius of me no matter what radio station they are on. Of course, they wont be able to talk back... but I wont need them to.

Anyone know if this is possible? And if so, how would I go about engineering such a device?

I can think of about 100 good uses for it already... Im sure you guys can come up with a few of ur own too.

If you are telling me just to yell... or play music really loud... hmmm...

that takes away the whole mystery of the contraption!

Don't get caught with it... The local cops are cats compared to the FCC if you get nailed with an illegal transmitter. House, car, bank account -all gone.. Lawyer got them all keeping you out of the Fed Big House...

meh, I figured it had to be somewhat illegal somehow...

Obviously devices have to operate without interference of others.. and this device it built TO interfer with the radio ... but ya know its a small terriotory funny experiement type deal. I break the law every day. I speed, I download music, etc. I know thats all little things.. but the main reason for the whole thing is really just to see if its possible and how it could be done.

I mean, the FM modulators can only transmit to the lower crappy FM stations like 88.something... and making a transmitter to take over all stations withing a small area might not even be possible because it would have to be powerful enough to take over all stations but yet stay in a confined area...

Either way, I understand the major consequences... the reality of the project will probably never happen anyways. I just wanna know if it is possible and how is could be done.

My brother has this thing similar to the iTrip for his iPod and can use any radio station he wants. The signal doesn't get any noticeably stronger on higher channels.

Really?

and how far away does this transmitter work? What brand is it?

Ive had them before and it only worked on a few select stations.. and was considerable better on some than others. I would be really amazed to find one that works like that one you mentioned.

Now, the FM modulator I have for my disc changed intercepts the attena wire alltogether and works really well.. but that isnt technically *transmitting* per say.

Mine can transmit to any station as well, just get like 100 of them and take up each station

you came from your mothers womb equipped with two such devices. They are located on your hands, and have two fingers to the left and right of it. Works very well (i do not have road rage, nor do i endorse the use of middle fingers while in a vehicle.)

Actually it is an iTrip. I was thinking it was a different brand. lol
http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/itripdock/

It had two different settings, one is like stereo but has weaker signal the other isn't stereo but has a stronger signal. It only works like maybe a MAX of like 10-15 feet from the antenna. Not very strong, obviously, or it would be breaking FCC rules.

i got to say thats not a new idea people have been doing it for years.as already stated pump up the volume illegal pirate radio is as close as you will come.the fcc is no joke.if you really wanted to you could run your own fm radio station but your power output would be in the miliwatts and not have much range. But that wont work with messing with people due to the interferance issue as stated. If you really need to bother people on the airwaves take your cb find the local channel and have a blast but even thats illegal

Ive never heard of this "pump up the volume" thing.. anywhere I can read info on it?

btw, the idea was never to have my own broadcast.. but yet.. just a freaky way to mess with someone..

Or say hi to those cute chicks ur playing leap frog with on the HWY.. ya know what I mean?

Like I said.. the reality of me doing.. meh.. prolly aint going to happen unless its withing my knowledge range and budget. But I still wanna know how it can be done.

Do a Google search on miniature FM transmitter diagram . After you have reviewed all 137,000 hits, you'll have some idea of how to do it.

That would be impossible. The frequency modulation would have to send out millions of different frequencies. The frequency is the number of times it is repeated in a certain amount of time.

Theoretically you want to send a million different frequencies out of one box, which you have to have a million different crystals. Good idea but it would not work.

It does work, it's called spread spectrum radio. Some of the 2.4 GHZ wireless routers use it.

Most oscillators use a inductor and capacitor to make them work. Change the inductance by moving the tuning slug and the frequency changes. No crystal is needed.

Don't believe me? Do a Google search on spread spectrum radio Ten million hits will keep you looking a long time.
