New here but not new to stangs. Been a long time since I've had one but just picked up a '84 Coupe yesterday. The car is in amazing shape. However, during the test drive it overheated. When we hauled it back to the dealership I checked the oil and the oil still looked good so I eliminated the cracked head/blown head gasket possibility. I figured bad water pump or stuck thermostat since the car hasn't been driven in 4 yrs. The car also cut out while test driving it but again I figured bad gas, bad fuel filter, plugs, distributor etc...Well, after new fuel, new thermostat, cleaned the distributor cap up (it looked bad) I took it for another spin. Car still gets hot & won't rev past about 4500 rpm. Here's another problem, I've always had fuel injected stangs, this 84 is new to me. I found the fuel pump right in front of passenger side rear wheel (also new to me because I thought it had a mechanical pump on side of engine on drivers side since it is carburated) but I cannot find the filter that looks like the one AutoZone sold me. I did find a small silver inline filter just inside the firewall on passenger side just above the smog stuff. I am lost on this. There's no filter where my other stangs had one. I've also read that this is CFI? I thought it was just a carbureted car? I'm wanting to scrap all the smog crap & slap an edelbrock intake and a Holley carb on it. I know this is a lot but if anyone has any ideas or solutions, I'm all ears!

Done
A brief list on your car will help,
5.0 stick or auto
Miles
Any modifications
Now do some maintenance, plugs, wires, thermostat, fuel filter
You describe some things that concern me, external aftermarket fuel pump? Placement of fuel filter? These things are not in a good place, electric fuel pumps push fuel and are not good at pulling fuel, research will show you where your stock fp should be located along with where your fuel filter should be.
Give us a pic of your engine compartment

you can see where the fuel filter is in the one pic. Some other forums I read people said 84 & 85 had electric pumps because they were "cfi" I have no clue.

Man thats pretty original, I can do a little research on that fuel pump location tomorrow unless someone else chimes in.
Yes I believe that will be efi but it will resemble a carb,

I'm going to order some books tomorrow. I just want a simple dual plane intake setup with a Holley or edelbrock carb. No emissions crap. A nice clean engine bay. Considering even scrapping the a/c vut idk yet. Just want it running cool & red lining before June10th, our first cruise night. Thanks for the help.

don't delete the a.c. and smog equipment. Especially if it works correctly. I don't know much about the CFI system but it's similar to the gm tbi system.

these things are pretty easy to troubleshoot, once some of the guys that are more familiar with that year car chime in we should be able to get you the info that you need to get this thing going in the direction that you want to. Be patient most of the time its a simple fix to get these things going again.
if you do decide to do a carb swap instead of working with the CFI then we have a writeup on how to do it the right way.

Whatever stock parts you take off, pumps, brakets and things like that save, those thongs are getting hard to fine for people that are restoring these cars.
