Hi,

I have a 65 fastback with a supercharged 289. I recently took it out a car show and ran fine going to. However, when I left the car show it was really hard to start and keep it idleing. It finally gave out and had to pull over. The car would start fine but would not hold an idle and just just off. The car was running perfect before this event. Could it be gas going bad since I have not driven the car in about 2-3 months? Could it have gummed up the jets? The thing that leads me to believe it is NOT fuel related is that I am getting 6 PSI of Fuel Pressure? Any ideas/advice would be greater appreciated? If you need additional info, please let me know.

Thanks,
Leo.

I doubt it's fuel; I had cars sit for much longer than that and still start and run fine. What's your ignition system made of?

Maybe a clogged fuel filter or weak spark?

Engine won't idle.

I have a Petronix ignition system. Once I pulled over and could not get it going again, I would not hear any popping/backfire from the motor. It was smooth reving it up but once I let off the gas, it would just die. On ethe way to the car show, the car ran beautifully. So I doubt that the jet on the carb would have gunked up?

Thanks again guys for the help, I do appreciate it.

It could be a million things, but maybe your alternator isn't providing enough juice at idle or maybe your timing is off at idle.

You could have good fuel pressure and still have a filter clogged at the carb, that would be easy enough to check.

Open your car box or remove the bonnet and see if the floats are stuck and flooding the engine. Mine used to do the same thing, felt like it was running out of gas but was actually flooding itself under the bonnet.

That's a good idea and would cause the car to only run when it's given throttle.

Mine did that to me once after the car sat for a few weeks.Left me on the side of the road thinking it was vapor locking or something, then i noticed once i got it started and revved it it would clean up a little then it did it again, got home, pulled the bonnet and gas was overflowinf from the vent tubes.
