i've noticed that whenever i'm pulling into a parking space, if i turn my steering wheel while i'm not moving/idle, the car will stall and die.

if i want to turn the wheel while not moving/idle, i have to give it some gas.

could this be a bad power steering pump?

the fluid level is full, so i'm not sure that is the problem.

thanks, gents.

It sounds like the spool valve in the steering rack is going. I'd like to hear what others think.

I remember other threads about this a while back, and while I don't recally the solution, I remember it being quite common.

My car did the same thing. I'm getting a remanufactured rack tuesday and should have everything running by next weekend. I'll report back if my problem went away. if it doesn't, I'd say it's the pump

cool, thanks Duncan.

another factor i'm unsure of is the new cam--it's pretty lopey, but the idle is set to around 850rpm... don't know if that's too low for the power steering at idle problem.

I get the same thing. Figured it was just normal and since my car doesn't idle very smoothly, a little resistance would make it stall a bit.

Thats strange my car does that to. At first I thought it was the cam being a PITA but then I thought it could be the fuel pump b/c my car wants to die stall and not run when it gets to a 1/4 tank and below but when I fill up it only takes 7.5-11.4 gallons to fill it up then it runs fine. Other times when its full or has pleantly of gas it will still stall out at times when at idle or a stop, it usually seems to be when Im turning as well.

Im only thinking it could be the power steering is b/c I have a small drip coming from that area. Its dripping down in front of the drivers side tire, its not oil and looks a lot like PS fluid. Perhaps its my PS pump and a fuel pump causing my problems?

^^hehe, i'm having the same issue w/ the fuel--i think the sending unit in the pump is bad, though, causing the fuel guage to read inaccurately.

i guess the p/s problem isn't so bad because the car runs, it's just annoying and i'd like to fix it so there'll be one less thing off the "why i hate my car" list.

it turned out to be my powersteering hose leaking. had same problem. Go get new power steering pump and hose, replace those 2 and you will not have that problems again for long time. if you don't want to buy new pump check your steering oil level and refill often, new pump (AGR performance) cost $100, and steering hose from FORD cost$100 (WTF!!!!!!IT"S A HOSE!!!whatever...) letting you all know. hope this fixes it and that was my solution.

FWIW, 5.0's don't have idle compensation for PS (unlike some smaller engines which do). A low or lumpy idle just might do it.

I've learned to not turn the wheel while stationary (which is hard on PS anyhow).

i should've mentioned that i busted the p/s hose during the engine swap (along w/ the a/c hose, too, hehehe) so i have a new one.

iac is new, too.

i guess aside from getting a new p/s pump, i'll just have to live with it--i need injectors and breaks before i get a p/s pump. only problem i'm having is it dying while turning at idle, so guess i can push it down the list.

thanks, gents.

Up the idle a bit...

Actually what if you have the A/C on.. does it still do it?

The problem is that the P/S creates a VERY large sudden drag on the engine... so at idle with no warning (other input) the car jsut dies... smaller cars (ie half engines, or 4 cyl engines) often have a pressure actuated switch to detect when the wheel is turned and electronically open teh iac to give the engine a little more power and keep it from dying...

due to a low idle and lopey cam you probably are just not making enough power at those RPMs to allow the engine to recover in time...

well Im kind of at a loss for what exactly my problem is b/c I appear to have a power steering pump leak (probably from a hose) but my issue also sounds like it could be the sending unit in the fuel tank. The pump is a walbro 255lph with only 15,000 on it so it could possibly be the sending unit in the tank. The car has 66,000 on it so I guess its possible that it could be gone although my last Mustang a 95 GT had 131,000 on it and I never replaced the sending unit.

Im going to have the PS issue checked out this week and if that does not solve my problem then the sending unit is my next move.
