I have a 68 with power steering. Everything is new from steering column to tie rod ends, except the control valve. The control valve, I was told, was rebuilt. I do have some slop in the steering. I put the car on jacks, have my g/f turn the wheel back and forth to see where the play might be. The play showed up in the control valve. I notice that when the steering wheel was turned left or right, the ball stud in the control valve moves slightly to the left or right before actually turning the wheels. The pitman arm is secured tightly on the control valve ball stud, but I didn’t think the ball stud should be moving from side to side. I can see why it would need to move from front to back. I know its old technology, but it shouldn’t have that much play in the steering.

I did purchase a ‘ball stud repair kit’, but it looks like the ball stud needs to be pressed in. Is this true? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Does the ball stud need to be pressed in or does it just sit in the cradle and then it's clamped on?

Thanks for your responce,
David

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but the problem you described is identical to mine and I wanted to know if rebuilding the control valve solved the problem? Any words of wisdom are appreciated.
