hey, searched for this but couldn't find anything so here i go..

well i've got me a 65 with 2.80 open diff in the back :\ needless to say this doesn't make me as happy as i would be with oh say a 3.55 LSD.i always thought i would have one hell of a time upgrading both the ring and pinion and to an LSD until i saw an episode of horsepower TV where they installed the Richmond Gear POWERTRAX in a chevelle. anyone install a powertrax unit? know someone who has? got a better idea for me? because right now it's looking like the best way for me. thanks for the help .

I have a Lock Rite by Powertrax in my 4x4 diffs. If this is the same basic design (replacing spider and side gears with locking components), I can testify to the traction effectiveness. Works great! But on road manners are not good. You really know it's there when turning corners.

Downloaded Powertrax' PDF. It says that they only have open diffs, not LSD for the early Mustangs...

The POWERTRAX® TRACTION SYSTEMS are the latest design in traction adding differential technology. It combines the smooth operation of a limited-slip differential, with the traction performance of a locking differential.

from the powertrax site..

although it seems you are correct, partially, they are not LSD, but they are not OPEN, they are new technology Lockers. finally found a price for one..377 for a 8" 28 spline ford..

The term used on there site for finding your rear axle Open , LSD etc.. means does that axle case ORIGINALLY came with that and originally they came OPEN thus u buy the open setup ITS NOT A OPEN DIFF otherwise that would defeat the whole purpose of buying dont you think? people that have newer axles that came with LSD case and diff installed have to use a diffrent type of unit in order to fit properly....
locker...

I run a 3.40 Tractionlock in my '65 convert. Took two hours to make the swap. I bought the pumpkin for $400.00 from a supplier in Hemmings Motor News. Runs pretty well. Now, I don't know anything about Powertrax, but I'm happy with the unit I bought. It came originally from a '67 Fairlane wagon so it is reinforced with the extra webbing.

1 word "garbage"

Don't believe me ask 6stang7 he tried using it.

My friend owns a dif shop and refuses to sell them to people unless they just gotta have it no matter what he says.

What happens is that since when it pops open it skips on the teeth eventually rounding them off or sheering them and when this happens the car does not move for thing.

What kind of heads are you looking for?

Also an auburn posi will probably be best to get instead of a stock posi unit.

I have a powertrax unit, while it was a very easy install and quite effective, I would definately not buy one again or recommend it to someone else.

I have a Detroit locker in my 66 9" and I would not do that. It has excessive lash and real clunky. It would be a great strip unit but for drivability it sucks... I also went from a C4 to a T5 and that made made it even worse. The tip in and tip out is not too good..

I just put one in my 66 with a 3.55 open diff we got on ebay. I'm lookin forward to trying it out, but for now it's up on stands. Gotta rehang the exhaust, etc as I was doing some other things to the car at the same time.

Mine was $212 Look around, you can find it that cheap without going to ebay.
