Precision Oil Pumps

I've had several events in the past that have persuaded me to never overlook the importance of a solid oil pump. After my first brand new oil pump failed, I purchased a blueprinted one with saftey wires from Ford Power Parts back in the 80s. They don't make them anymore but I did find a company that performs the same high-tolerance blueprinting.

You will spend a little more but I can attest it is worth every penny. Case in point. The last factory rebuilt and installed 289 I disassembled had one of the oil pump bolts that seals the bottom plate sitting in the bottom of the oil pan. This explained the low oil pressure I was experiencing.

I purchased a racing 302 version that uses a cast iron 460 plate on the bottom for added strength. IIRC it cost $89 and flows more than the standard Melling but less than the HV version. I also picked up an ARP bolt kit for the pump and pickup along with billet steel oil pump drive shaft.

I'm not removing anything on the oil pump. I leave it to the expertise of the technician who assembled the pump.

I totally agree. We discussed my engine build and oil system (basically a 7 quart T-Pan with max of 6,500 RPM and standard bearing clearances) and he recommended the 302 Race pump. He kept me from buying more than what I need and recommended the best for my situation. I got a lot of knowledge transfer from a relatively short conversation.

Good info. I'll be using a new Canton pickup designed for their 7 qt. pan.
