Pressure plate question.

Will a pressure plate for an'86 5.0 fit a flywheel for a '66 289?
Are ther certain later years that will work for the early style flywheels? BTW doesn't the flywheel for a 66 call for a 10 inch clutch?

no. ford changed the bolt pattern on the pressure plates in the early 70's. the base pressure plate for the 289 was a 10" clutch, but you can put a 10.5" clutch on the 157 tooth flywheel. if you want something larger though you will have to step up to the 164 tooth flywheel.

I was able to use a flywheel out of an '84 on my 1990 roller motor that was in my '66 coupe. I went this route because I was able to use my early clutch with the newer flywheel. The 84 flywheel has the old clutch bolt pattern and the newer 50oz counterweight. I can't tell you any other years that work, but I know that one will. I am thinking the '83 is the same but not for sure.

You can also have your flywheel drilled/taped at a machine shop for the different clutch disk diamete. Just make sure you don't use the later model flywheel on your early model motor or you will do some serious damage to it.

if you do this, make absolutely sure everything is done perfectly otherwise you will have a severe vibration. there are flywheels that have both bolt patterns already on the flywheel. i think all after market flywheels are drilled thus.

Thanks for the answers. I'm not drillin anything as it sounds like I'll save a few bucks but wind up spending way more later on.

Thats why I said to have it done at a machine shop instead of doing it yourself. I also wouldn't trust Joe machine shop. A good race shop can do this for a reasonable price but you have to find one you trust.

speed shop guys start to talk at $100, and you have no warranty it will be done correctly. At this price I would go for an aftermarket plate with holes for both wheels, or would not touch it.

I was figuring for 1hr of labor at a machine shop. Get an aftermarket flywheel for sure.
