Problems with PI heads

i got a set of PI heads for really cheap. everything looked fine until i started to take them apart. here is what i found. it appears as though the motor ran out of oil and seized. i need to know if anyone who has experience machining these heads if this can be fixed.

i took a bunch of pictures of the heads. i have all the combustion chambers, and all the cam journals and caps. i really need help on this because i need to know if i can use these or are they useless and i have to try to get my money back from the guy on Ebay.

i wouldn't even try, if it seized it overheated and cracked, don't even know how bad at that. i bet there is warpage too, try and get your money back, good luck.

Your links suck.

I am guessing you took the cams out and noticed the cam journals are a little rough looking. Thats normal but let me see some pics.

Yup they had an oiling problem at one time.

What I would do is see if you have a local machine shop that could line bore them because as they are now there done.

thats what i figured. do u know what a machine shop would put in the heads to make them work. does someone make bearings that slip in? my boss said that similar problems on honda heads usually meant that the head gets tossed.

im planning on getting new cams anyway, but im just worried, if the journals get line bored, the cams will sit lower. this is the first time ive dealt with maching OHC heads. anytime i did head work i either used new parts or it was a pushrod motor.

I was just thinking of that same thing. I think the best route for those is a line bore and bearings or new heads. I would ask this question on www.modulardepot.com .

i really wish ford had used bearings in their heads. it wouldve cost what $5 $10 a motor.

I had the exact same problem happen to my Cougar when I bought it. Apparently the previous owner let it run low on oil and the Cam on the pass side head ceased up. Broke most of the rocker arms and scored up the journals pretty badly. I was told by a local machine shop that they could be fixed, but I decided to go to a set of PI heads regardless. One thing I did notice after I tore the engine down though, was that one of the valves made contact with one of the pistons, so you may want to take into consideration that you may have a bent valve or two on your hands as well.

Hopefully you didn’t pay a lot for them, but it may end up costing you a fair bit to have them fixed an inspected. You may or may not just be better off looking for another set and keeping these ones around for parts?
