I currently bought a 99 stang. The guy only had one key and was missing the wireless door unlock remote. Is it possible to buy one from ebay and program it to my car myself?

Thanks
Derek

Programming the key fob isn't hard, but I don't have the instructions in front of me so I can't say how easy it is for just anyone to do it, butI know a dealer can for a fee.

I was able to find out how to prog one for a 2002 grand marquis by doing a search in yahoo. I'd give that a try. Also a lot of times when you buy one off ebay the seller will have the instructions on how to go about programming it. Like previous poster said it is really simple. With mine i just had to turn the key on and off a few times to get into program mode

Put the key in the ignition but do not start the engine. Turn it to accessory and back 12 times very quickley. You will see the doors lock & unlock. Press any of the buttoms on the new remote and it will program to the car. You can program more than one remote at the same time. Good luck.

That sounds like it may work for a factory system. But what if it's an aftermarket system? Do you think the same would apply?

Ford keys and Fob's are made by Ford. That is what you should be looking for. If it gets too frustrating, I paid $75 for an extra key and FOB from a Ford dealer, includes programming.

does this apply to fords in general or just the mustang.....also is that a common method used by other car makers?

Not sure if it works on all fords or not. I had to reprogram my remote twice and the dealer wanted $25 to do it. I found the program instructions online and I worked perfect for my mustang.

If it is an aftermarket system that copies the OEM ford system then it should work. If it is just an aftermarket remote door lock like they have on car alarms then I would check with the manufacturer.

Uh, did you guys think of actually looking in your car manual. It is in there! That is just for the Remote though.

Now the key is a different story. If you only have one key you are out of luck. you will have to pay FORD at least a minimum of 30 minutes to go into your computer to reprogram the security setting to accept another key.

You could do it fine if you had two keys but since you only have one you will have to take it to FORD.

Slow 2.3 said he bought the car used & if the guy only had one key and no remotes, chances are he didn't have the manual either.
