I searched but didn't find anything readily available in the historical posts or in my Haynes manual... so questions:

My 'Stang is completely stock except for the mods listed in signature. I am thinking of spending some cash for gears in the near future and want to do it smart and right.

1) Did the Cobra (1995) rear end come with limited slip from the factory? When I light up the tires both tires spin, indicating to me that it has one, but I don't know if it's stock or if the prior owner slammed something in there.

2) If you have to yank the axles to repl the gears, doesn't it make sense to replace the axles with lighter weight ones to minimize the weight you are pushing and also maximize the HP? If so, does anyone have recommendations of lightweight axles out there?

3) Are the axles 31 or 28 spline (stock)?

Any other advice about repl gears?

Thanks everyone as always!

stock trac loc if your doing gears i suggest doing a doing a trac loc rebuild since your there.. put fords friction modifier back in, as far as lighter axels no ideas there never worried about it...and they come stock 28 spline. hope this helps

Agreed. The TL is stock. Good advice with rebuilding the TL at the same time as doing gears.

I would not swap axles for any weight consideration myself.

Good luck.

These guys are right on as usual. Only reason to swap axles is really for the strength. You won't find aluminum axles on the market (as far as I know) and stock ones don't weigh much anyways. If you were to swap to stronger 31-spline axles, you'd have to get an aftermarket trac-loc unit, if I am not mistaken. Unless you're pushing some serious power and run slicks, I'd leave that alone. But you should probably pull the axles and replace the bearings while you're in there.

A rear end cover/girdle is a good Idea as well...strengthen the lains a little and gives you a REAL drain/fill plug. I think the trick flow ones are like $120.
