This is actually for a mandatory college class(communication in small groups), but i have to interview a firefighter(over the phone or in person, i think the internet is close enough) and ask a couple questions(due tomorrow, thursday)..anyway here it goes, if a Firefighter could answer these in a long winded reply that would be awesome, Thanks!(if you're more comfortable answering in a PM that's fine too)

1. How are small groups used in your field?
2. what small group skills are needed in this profession?

1. Small groups are used in the field to simplify the task of a huge project. Take into consideration a fairly large fire. You cannot have each person going where they want at random doing what they think needs to be done, the main thing is order and structure among the group as a whole. By dividing the large group into smaller groups you first and foremost improve safety, secondly each group clearly understands what it's objective is. You have one group that attends to the truck or trucks, monitoring water flow and the scene overall. You then have another group who can be the water crew that fights the fire with the water, another group can be dedicated to the structure as far as windows and doors needing removed, holes cut in the roof to gain better access to the fire, ect. Another small group can be on standby for relief as members need rest. Another group is needed to monitor the scene for safety among the whole operation and correct unsafe situations as the occur if required.

2. Skills needed in this profession are good communications skills, training and understanding of structure and chain of command within the department. All of these are necessary for everyone to work together and be productive on the scene. The ability to work under pressure and make quick decisions as situations change are a plus as well.

hope this helps

1. We need lots of people to drive the trucks and hold the hoses.
2. Beer drinking, poker playing and have no sense of staying away from a burning building.
