quick speedo gear q

i looked at the gear that is inside my TRANSMISSION. it is a yellow gear. however it has wayyy to many teeth to be a 6 or 7...i think. how do i tell which one it is. there are two gears right. one in the tranny and one right behind the acutal speedo right?

Nope. You have two gears, both in the tranny. One is on the end of the speedometer cable, and is somewhat cylindrical in shape. The other is on the tailshaft of the tranny, and is shaped like a doughnut.

The first is easy to swap by just removing the cable assembly from the tranny and making the switch. The second requires opening up the tranny to get to the tailshaft for the change (on later AODs, it's machined onto the shaft and can't be swapped).

yeah, that's ur driven gear that u're looking at. the drive gear is a little more involved to get to.

in my driveway... Can I just jack tha car up and get under there and fix it quick?

thats how i got to mine. i just need to know how to get the gear off the speedo cable. i didnt really mess with it while it was in my hand, i didnt have a gear to switch the old one out with.

Hey, I don't mean to steal tha thread... but is it really easy to change tha driven gear? I need to change mine to fix my speedo and I want to just do it in my driveway... Can I just jack tha car up and get under there and fix it quick?

I think you need to buy a new retaining clip for tha gear, so it doesn't fall out

The driven gear is easy to change.

Find where the speedo cable assembly goes into the tranny (driver's side, toward the rear).

Use and 11mm socket to remove the retaining bolt holding the assembly to the tranny (you may have to pull the wire harness connector off the speed sensor to get slack to pull out the cable).

Carefully pull the cable straight out of the tranny.

Look around the base of the driven gear, and locate the metal tab of the gear retaining clip. Use a small, flat screwdriver to carefully pull the clip straight out of the gear. Now you can pull the gear off the cable.

If you're careful you can use the old retaining clip, or you can buy a new one since they're pretty cheap.

With the new gear on the cable, carefully insert the cable assembly back into the tranny. It should slide in easily, but if not, try turning the speedo gear just a hair and reinserting.

Reinstall the retaining bolt, and wire connector.
