Rearend clanking on 9" with Truetrac

Recently put in 9" versailles with 3.73 gears and Truetrac. When slowing down under 25mph there is a clunking going on on the right side of the diff. There are no noises upon acceleration or at mid-high speed coasting. We put it up on the rack and idled in 1st gear and your hear a constant "clink-clink" coming from the outer right tube area.

The diff was then torn apart and everything looks in order and is wearing perfectly. U-joints and pinion clearances are fine. The noise is somewhat annoying as everything is brand new but also working perfectly.

Is this normal, I'm baffled.

To be honest, this sounds like brakes... not the diff.

my car does the same thing with a powertrax locker, other than the noise all seems well.

I know that it is not much help, but my truetrac is still absolutely quiet, even after 2000 miles and over 2 dozen hard runs with sticky tires (and a 4 speed) at the track.

Just an update, the shop that built the rear took it apart and found nothing wrong and everything wearing great. So they put everything back together, I drove it for 3 hours today and somehow the noise has disappeared. Hope it stays that way.

the noise you're hearing may be a bad wheel bearing or the shop may not have gotten the axle retaining bolts tight causing teh clunk but when they took it apart and put it back together they got them torqued correctly

No. It has no clutches (which is the reason for the modifier)--only gears.

Weekend update, the clanking has returned but slightly less than before. It was quiet but something on the right side is getting loose creating some slop somewhere in the diff. tube. ????

I am with bnickle and suspect a wheel bearing is going bad.

I've got 9" with 3.70 and TrueTrac and it runs absolutely silent.
